i have been playing guitar for about 4 years now and i never had one music lesson .... i just dont get it because i really can pick up any instrument and start playing like i know what im doing .... its crazy !!

Many creative areas......self taught painter.....landscape art.....
Learned to build furniture (self taught)....had a good business doing that....

Hidden talent I got none although I am wishing I do have such type of talent but sadly when God opens up windows for talent I guess I am sleeping all the way

I don't believe in natural talent. I think everybody has certain types of behaviour they're naturally predisposed to be good at, but I don't think that there's a music gene that makes you good at music.

I play the guitar too, and my friends say "wow, you've got a natural gift" or something but I think that dismisses the fact I've practiced hard every day for the past 10 years.

So no, no natural gifts, just lots of things I'm good at because I've practiced and dedicated myself to it.

Awww Ed I think there is such a thing as "natural" talent. There are lots of kids who have shown they are really good at something without any training. Don't you consider that "natural"?

I used to be good at dance - and no one in my family ever did that - but my mom/dad and sisters were all really good at art - specifically painting, drawing and hand building pottery. so I think that the talent gene does run in the blood....mine was just mostly in the peforming art area....

also, my dad was an electrician. He built radios, tv's and stereo's as a hobby - we even had an intercom system in our home that he built from scratch. (he took way too much pleasure in waking us at 7am to revely on weekends though) And as an adult I've always had this knack for fixing tv's (tube tv's). Wouldn't that be an inherited talent?

I think people are predisposed to be better at certain things: hand/eye coordination, fitness, strength, intelligence of different kinds etc. But it's practice, and lots of practice, that turns those into a usable talent.

People tend to cite Beethoven as a good example of natural talent. They say he wrote his first symphony at 8 years old. What they fail to mention is that he practiced piano for some 8 hours a day at his father's wish, from the tender age of 3. By the time he was 5, he'd most likely played every single combination of keys on the piano many times over. That practice is what lead to his talent.

Kids have an astonishing propensity to learn very quickly, some faster than others. I believe this is mistaken for "natural talent". To say someone is naturally gifted is to belittle the hard work they've put in to their skill, and it excuses people that can't be bothered to learn one for themselves.
