I left my computer on today while I went to school, and my dad decided to shut it down while I wasn't home. When I arrive back and turn my computer back on, I find that my external hard drive (G:\) is not longer working. It was working just fine when I left this morning.

Upon opening My Computer and double clicking on Local Drive (G, I recieve the following error:
Quote:
G:\ is not accessible
The parameter is incorrect.
I had 60gigs of data on that drive, and all of it was stuff that I wanted to keep. Is there any way that I can fix this drive without losing the data? (or without losing much of it)

BTW, occasionally it gives me this error...
Quote:
G:\ is not accessible
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

1) Switch the computer on then add the drive.
2) Try reinstalling the drivers. They may have become corrupt or missing.
3) Use the drive on another machine.

Reinstalling the drivers didn't help, and when I used it on another computer it still didn't work. Now, there's obviously an interla problem with the actual drive. Is there any way that I could salvage (any of) the data on it?

It does spin when I turn it on. It's a Maxtor 6 Y080L0 (80gig).

well.... after a little thinking and some research its possible the drive sleeve USB adapter is probably bad or the connection is bad...try taking the drive out of the sleeve disconnect it then reconnect it then plug it back in and try it again

I suggest you just get a new USB adapter. If it still doesn't work, don't take it out of the sleeve as you damage the oils on the bands (i did that before).

Just use your warantee.

Alright guys, thanks! I'll probably take a look at it on Sunday; that's the first free day I'll have. I will, however, be meeting with someone tomorrow (casual get-together) and see if he would be interested in helping me out.

Thanks for all the help, guys! I'll post here again later once I've taken a few stabs (not literally) at it.

I took it apart (which was a b--ch to do) and made sure all the connections inside were secure... anything that I could disconnect, I did so and reconnected it. Still nothing. I can tell by listening that the disk DOES still work (still spins).

Sorry, I forgot to check back here.

I am having the same problem with my Maxtor One Touch. I've had it for over a year and a half and it's been working fine up until now. I was rearranging some data on it and it kept freezing up windows explorer so I rebooted the machine and suddenly it didn't work any more! It shows up still as drive E but when I try to access it, I get one of two messages - either The drive is unaccessible. The parameter is incorrect. or because of an I/O device error. The drive itself seems fine - the blue light is still on and when I push the One Touch button, it initiates the retrospect back up software just like it's supposed to. So far I have tried uninstalling all the software and reinstalling it - still nothing; and trying it on another computer - I get the same errors. Both computers are running Windows XP. I have been using the drive a lot more frequently over the last couple months... help!

A friend of mine had a dead external drive that got damaged in transitto University one term. We took it out of it's sleeve and hooked it up internally on my machine - it worked perfectly, it was just the usb -> ide interface electronics on the sleeve that were duff.
