Having attracted your prurient and salacious attention... yes, I really am a virgin at this problem!

My friends think of me as a "computer expert", but I just work with PC's and don't play games.

This 14-year-old boy is coming up to his 15th birthday. He is the Leader of a "clan" playing Fallen Earth, an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game with a lot of graphics. Here are the specifications for the game.

He complains that the game goes too slow on his PC, and wants a "fix" for his birthday.

It is an old Dell E520, but upgraded to 3GB RAM and 32-bit Windows 7, with a new mid-range graphics card some 2 years ago. The internet connection is a standard home one.

The CPU he has is an Intel Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (2M Cache, 1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), which meets the minimum specs for the game. I don't think the CPU is the most important thing in this problem, but am I right?

His mother (who knows about as much about computers as I know about the anatomy of a penguin) is determined to "fix" things by buying him a new notebook for about $500. I think that, far from solving the problem, it would make things worse, because a notebook would have an inferior graphics card to his present one.

The boy is guessing that a better (and far more expensive) broadband connection would solve things, but I am not convinced. SpeedTest shows Ping 19 ms, Download speed 15.08 Mbps and Upload speed 0.86 Mbps. I think that that sounds OK for an on-line game, but am I wrong?

My guess is that a very good new graphics card would be the best answer. The game specs recommend nVidia GeForce 8800GTS. He has a GeForce9 9500GT installed. I'm afraid the graphics card specs mean nothing to me! Is 9500 better than 8800, or is GTS better than GT? Or do I have it all wrong?

Please help with impartial advice! None of my social circle will ever respect me if I get this wrong.

The two more important things are the processor speed of the graphics card and the broadband connection speed. A new laptop will not solve the first problem in that price range because most in that range do not have a dedicated graphics card with its own processor. Check the recommended broadband speed for that game; if it'll allow seamless streaming it's not that, and make sure the ISP is one that hasn't oversubscribed to the point those specs are dropping at the times this person's playing at. Test the speed at multiple times, especially not only peak use times but the times he's most likely to play.

The game site doesn't seem to recommend a speed. I'll suggest he tests the speed at various times. Does anybody know what is "a good speed" for a game?

I can't seem to find a recommended speed anywhere, but again, if the connection is fast enough to stream a HD signal without locking it's fast enough for the game.

found a site that says recommended speed = upwards of 500kb/sec.

Memory
3 GB for XP,
4 GB for Vista

Graphics
nVidia GeForce 8800GTS or
ATI Radeon 3870,

512 MB Video Ram

Speed probably isn't a problem with your connection. My connection rates at about 23 Mbps, upload at around 2Mbps, and is enough to support a whole houseload of kids playing WoW all day. They love my connection because it never lags for them, and have shown up 6-8 at a time even. Even at 15 and .8, you should be fine, especially if there's only one person playing on it.

Most of the gamers I know (I'm not one of them) play on laptops.

It seems that counter-intuitively the 8800 is a better card than the 9500, so this might be the problem.

Is the ATI Radeon HD 5670 a good upgrade? I have been told that it won't need a PSU upgrade to cope.

How do they manage to avoid school?

Aren't laptops generally still more expensive and harder to upgrade than desktops? This is a kid, and budget is limited.

Well, school is only 5 days a week, after all.

Sure, but most brand new laptops are capable of playing the latest games. If your budget's $500, it's true you'll get more power from a desktop. Also, the only thing you can usually upgrade on a laptop is the memory.

All modern computers have a 64 bit architecture. They need at minimum 4 mb of RAM.
