It's only the latest installation of humanity's setback. The half-hour long commercials started back in the eighties with the Transformers, GI Joe, and such. Pokemon is just more blatant in its shameless animated marketing.
Then again, back in the eighties they had some good anime shows that played in the mainstream for the first time, like Star Blazers.
