LOL! guilty.

Before cd's came out we never read the inside of a cassette sleeve. We used to make copies upon copies and give them to everyone we knew. A dual, high speed dubbing tape deck was THE thing to have.

Downloading songs which you already have on CD is not illegal in the sense that, as has already been said, you are seen to be simply backing up the music that you already have (or replacing a scratched CD). It works along the same principles of being allowed to copy any piece of video or software if it's only to be kept for personal use, as a backup. All new computers with writable drives, whether they be CD or DVD, come with such statements in the handbook.

But of course, we're all whiter than white aren't we

It most likely is.

AllofMP3....

The site is indeed legal - but only within Russia. UK consumers will not face legal action for buying tracks from the site, however, it may soon face the same kind of legal action from record labels as CDWow.com did earlier this year.

The problem is that copyright is granted to specific areas. In the UK, we are part of the European Economic Area, bound by our membership to the European Union. Russia is not a member

Both are illegal, and measures are in place to fix it.

As for the original post, these people are only trying to give downloaders a 'comfort blanket'. If you are paying for it, it must be legal, right?

Wrong. The only way you stay legal is to stay away from free or very cheap download sites. We all know who are legal, so stick with them, and you will be fine.

what exactly do you mean both are illegal, file sharing is not illegal nor should it ever be it has many many more uses then just downloading pirated items.

Also if you have purchased the actual work then downloading a "back-up copy" off of a file share service is perfectly legal and should be.

bottom line people in general just need to use more common sence I know I know some of you may say common sence what who has that anymore.................

Actually this is a common misconception. You are allowed to make copies from the "original" for backup purposes. The other problem lies in the file sharing entity itself. The entity or person sharing the file NEEDS to have the proper licensing to do so.

There are several rights afforded to a copyright holder and the right to re-distribute the material is one that only the "original" copyright holder can allow. If I buy a song from Itunes and let you copy it, that is illegal (assuming it is over theInternet). If download a song from Itunes and contact the copyright holder/licensing firm and obtain the right to re-distribute then and only then is it legal.

lawyers could argue this forever...... (wait they are)

they could use such arguments as (mind you this is simplified):

The person didnt have the means or know how to make there own personal "back up" ....

or

Ok so your car became old and banged up, now does that make it ok for you to go steal the same exact thing only in better condition.......

just to name a few................

Is it legal probably not.............do you still do it, probably................should software cost 1000s' of dollars. Seriously, think about the amount of times its sold etc., ok so the distrubution and packaging costs money. Well then why doesnt everything cost 1000s' of dollars. How is it that AutoCad costs more than most CRTs', some LCDs, and some Plasma screens. Are you telling me that a LCD monitor cost less to develope, manufacture, package, and distribute than a copy of AuotCad. OK so you say people are gonna make money off the software so it should cost more, why, people make tons of money off cheap computers(you could use anything for an example), should a dell then cost twice as much if someone plans to use it for a business!?

It's a seriously crazy world we live in and I'm willing to bet that every single one of us in the whole entire world has at one point in time broken some law of some sorts, does that mean its ok, NO. What that means is our systems need reformating(pun intended)

and thats my final 2 cents on the subject

oh and should CDs cost more than tapes........................SERIOUSLY
