Hello. I have recently found a russian site (at least I beleive .ru is russian) anyway, it is a site offering mp3 downloads. They do charge however the rates are extremely cheap, $0.10 a track, and some songs free. I was just wondering if this site is legal and if it is ok to download the songs from this site. I have tried searching the site but I can't find any legal information.

Are there different laws in russia which I could be prosecuting for here in England or something? Please help...

Its most def illegal, the reason they can get away with it is because most copyrights are not "international copyrights" so not all countries honor eachothers copyrights.

I belive you would be in violation of your country's laws if you download those songs, possibly not sure. But think of it this way if it is illegal and you did buy some they now have a record of you doing so, not just a IP address but all your informaiton.

Personally I would stay away.

If it is illegal in the country you reside, it is illegal for you to do it.

It would be prudent to carefully consider the source of your "opportunity" for cheap music. Might it be possible that you will get more than music for such a nominal price? Legality aside, it is advisable to use common sense.

Kyrnt makes a good point, but dont only think about other things you could be downloading but also where is your payment information going. Who is going to see your paypal info or your credit card information.

Personally I wouldnt risk it, the leglity, the fraud, the malicious programs, and the rest all of which could have some very negative side effects.

Also bear in mind that by giving some dodgey sites business (can't speak for all of them, but there are a few..) you could possibly be funding terrorists.

How would he be to blame if he downloaded it though? He isnt the one offereing music cheap/free he is just purchasing a product from his standpoint.

Your absolutly right, I expected to be shot down after making that post. Yet I believe it is at least a bit different on the internet! Considering on the internet you dont have an annimated officer going "sir I am going to have to give you a ticket for that!" as if that would even be effective!

If any of you watch the show "The Screensavers" on tech tv they just talked about this. They said that they where not sure of the legality of it either. This is off there website

i dont get it...
why are you guys paying for music?
there are tons of sites that offer it free and im pretty sure its legal if you own the original cd.

Also theres file sharing where you can get just about anything from.. (im not quite sure why this isnt illegal)
