I want to buy a domain name which is expiering the second of march
In my timezone thats within 1 hour.

Now when i will be able to buy the domain, the day it expires --> in one hour
or the day after it expires?

And in what timezones are we talking

Hoping for some quick help to determine if i can go to sleep

let's brush my teeth while i'm waiting

do all domains fall into a status of redemption?

i've read things which quote that it will take up to 75 days before i can buy the domain name

****

Suppose i can sleep well now :P

I think it's 30 days redemption and then the time prior for holding. It could last up to 75 days....

Did you backorder the domain? Are you sure the original owner won't re-register?

If the owner doesn't re-register and the domain goes into the holding period, you may want to try either backordering the name, or if you want it that bad use a third party to snap the name for you.

I can only recommend the option I know of, and that is to go to Godaddy and look up the domain. It will say the name is taken and will ask if you would like to backorder it. I think it costs $18, although I'm not too sure about that.

I've never backordered a domain so I can't tell you if that will include the domain registration fee or not...

i am not completly sure about you getting it faster that 75 days. as it just means as once the domain name is release you get first dibs on the domain name. so if they do reregister your backorder will continue to pend until they stop reregirsting it. i am pretty sure it does not include the registration fee. for me my two domain names are on automatic renewal. for now. until i decide i dont want them then i either sell them or let the 1 year run out.

I have used backorders on Godaddy quite a bit. As has a friend of mine. I've never seen their programming code, I don't know how they built it, but I can tell you my experience.

First, my friend had a domain name stolen due to a loophole in Verisign's old non-automated system. He couldn't steal it back, because they closed the loophole. So he backordered. The DAY the domain name expired, he got an email saying that Godaddy was attempting to take it back. He didn't have to wait 30 or 90 days, although it did take a couple days for it to be finalized. I don't know if it always takes 2 days. My backorders have never been successful, although one domain name I want expires today, so we'll see how fast Godaddy responds.

Second, it appears that what Godaddy does is something like an hourly cron job. In other words, they have a script or program that just repeatedly looks up the domain name, trying to catch it the moment it expires. This IS actually a race. For example, if someone uses Dotster to setup a backorder, and I use Godaddy to setup the SAME backorder, then the two systems will try to beat eachother to capture the domain when it expires. My friend got lucky, and got in first. I personally think he was the only person who had setup an automatic backorder, so he had no competition. I seem to always have competition, and Godaddy always tells me it's trying to secure the domain name, but then comes back and says someone else beat me to the punch.

Bottom line, it's not a guarantee. But having an automated computer system on your side is a big advantage. And if Godaddy can't get the domain name for you, it lets you pick another, and it keeps trying until it gets one (well, it will try for a year).
