I recently registered a domain name, and I've been using it for awhile for storage and stuff, but I hadn't used email on it, other than an email forwarder.

I finally logged into the webmaster account which was a catch-all. There were a _ton_ of emails. And these had all come in in the week or so that I had had the domain and hosting.

What's my point? Well, my domain name is something people had/have been using instead of giving their real email address.

I know that I'm guilty of it too. In the past when I'd give my email address, I'd do stuff like whatever@none.com, blabla@whatever.com and stuff like that. I'd never had a second thought about it.. but now that it's happening to me.. I realize how much it sucks.

Yeah, I can blackhole the majority, one of the problems is the jonathan account has been used too. So I can't even use that account since I get so much crap.

Anyway, the next time you don't want to give your email address, and use a fake one, try using something that nobody will ever register, or at least probably not. (example: blabla@asdf-341.com)

I got 102 emails in the last 2 days. That's not too much SPAM, but when you consider that this was previously not even an active domain name, it's a lot.

Spam seems to find you no matter where you hide. Or behind what email you hide. LoL!

You're right. Spam is always gonna find you. Although there are certain degrees of spammage.

I managed to keep my main Yahoo email account SPAM free for a few years. Now I get 1-2 pieces of SPAM daily, mainly something with health in the subject.

My dad's email account went from a few pieces of spam to loads of spam daily. He gets a lot more than a hundred pieces of spam everyday. They mainly seem to be of the Viagra sort.

One of my younger bros aged 10 signed up for the wrong thing. Some stupid offer for kids. Within days, he was getting lots of spam. What was worse was that it was of the really sick sort of spam. Fortunately it was a free email account so I just closed it.

I think that if you use common sense, you can stay spam-free for a long time. The main thing I think is, just be sure who is getting your email address. Some people seem to sign up for every single 'offer' that's out there.

If you're using POP3 mail, download POPfile (http://popfile.sourceforge.net/). It's free and (although it takes a bit of time to get working), it is extremely good. According to the details now, it has classified nearly 4000 e-mails,, 86% of which is spam. It's accuracy rate is 98.86%.

Probably one of the best downloads I've ever done!

That's why it's good to have a service that requires email verification. It really does help cut down on a lot of that stuff.

People that want to get RID of spam, try http://www.spamarrest.com

It's PAID but it's REAL good. You tell them who you want to keep on your Email Allow List. So it's like Close All Policy and then Open 1,2,3,4,5 !!!

I've also had problems with porn emails. I have one email address that 95% of the emails are porn spam. Geemyknee! Usually, I look down the list and delete 100% of the emails. I'll get rid of that one very soon.

Here's a new problem that happened to me. I got an email from a friend of mine named Jane. I opened it to find out it wasn't from her, but it was porn spam. If that wasn't enough, it also opened my IE browser with porn. I had the Pop-up Stopper Companion off at the time so when I shut it down, it opened up 5 other windows. And some of those windows did not have a way to close them. The last window was trying to download some kind of porn browser.

Needless to say, that really "ticked" me off!

Since then, I've had another spam email that opened my browser. I really dislike that.

So here's a question: How do they do that? And how do you stop an email like that from opening your browser?

I use Proxomitron, this is a very popular free web filter. The only thing is that not too long ago, the creator decided he couldn't take the time to work on it, so there are no new versions of it coming out.

I've been using this software program for a number of years. You can download it at http://www.spamblocked.com/proxomitron/ . It's basically a proxy program, so everything that is going through the HTTP port gets 'checked'.

It does a lot more than just block popups. You can block certain cookies, stop animations, block ads, allow right-clicking when it's not allowed, etc. There are tons of settings.

You can find a good intro/help file at http://www.sankey.ws/proxomitron.html . That explains most of the settings available.

I think you can go to downloads.com and find a free program that stops popups from happening. If you have aol it will give you reminders about email that could contain pictures etc, so you will double check that you know who the email if from.

It's annoying and disturbing when that happens. I just Alt Ctrl Del (Only do it once) Then it give you a list of programs you can close. I just close anyting that it IE that could be trying to pop open in a case like that, or leave it's browser as my default browser.

The problem with alt+ctrl+del is that you have to close Internet Explorer, so you lose all other windows that you have open.

I've got Pop-Up Stopper Companion and very happy with how it kills pop-ups. It also has many other functions, like clearing the dropdown url history, clearing browser history, clearing cookies, clearing the browser cache and temp files, emptying the recycle bin, etc. It has a place for hotlinks and a place to keep cookies from your choice of sites. It's a good program. There is a free version, but I have the paid version with the up-dates.

However, in the case of the email that opened my browser, it didn't stop that and I don't know of one that will stop that. The email did not open a pop-up, it actually opened an IE window.

Proxomitron checks _all_ HTML as long as it's properly configured with your internet settings.

It can (you have to specify what) stop malicious HTML, javascript, etc.

Dave, the most effective way to stop those pop-ups (in any situation) is to disable JavaScript entirely. I think that in terms of usefulness, the downfalls of client-side scripting far outweigh the advantages. I keep them disabled unless they are necessary to view a webpage.

Just out of curiosity, Jonathan, what was that domain of yours?

My yahoo email account is free of spam. My zwallet email account is not on the other hand. I don't mind spam at the zwallet one though as the more email I have to delete the more money I earn LOL.

I personally never used yeahok.com either when signing up for something. But some people apparently use this one.

Sucks for me, but it would really suck to have none.com, because I know that I've used that one, lots of times.
