Lets say that my parents set up a keylogger to see what I was up to on the internet. Is there a way that I can check to see if there is one running?

having been the person who set one up once I would say no. It is totally undetectable unless you know in advance what you are looking for.

My advice if you really want to find it, and it won't be easy, is to find the file name of each keylogger program and search for it on the computer in all folders.

I can't think of any easier way because if it is a good keylogger it won't be found. I have prior experience with this

Just ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager and see whats running. Stop everything that you don't use or sounds like a keylogger.

Thanks! Just cause I'm gonna run one to find out my dad's AoL password, cause we have a bet going that I can find it by noon next Wednesday, but if I do find it, I have to tell him how. So then when I tell him, he's probably gonna start running them on me, so I want to know how to close it just in case.

Thanks again!

You have to tell him how? Can't you use just a bunch of geek speak to confuse him? I do that to my mother all the time.

Well, I don't exactly know how I can say "I used a key logger" in geek speak...

To tell the truth, I'm not too fluent in geek speak to begin with...

Most keyloggers are REALLY hard to find and are hidden.
You won't find it with an ctrl alt delete.

Many rename themselves and move them to different parts of the computer.

Check this out.

These are illegal if installed on a computer you do not own. They can be used in good and bad ways.

Well, being that it's a bet with a relative and both parties are consenting, I don't think that SmokingTequila is doing anything wrong. It's all in good fun, right? Now, if this was done on another computer owned by someone else that didn't know what was going on, that's a whole 'nother ballgame...

It is possible that you find it if it's a simple keylogger it will be up there in the task manager or something. Good Key Loggers are very difficult to find as their PID is somewhat like a windows internal dll not easily identified to be a keylogger.

Now all depends if your parents are Ultra Experts or Novices !! Beware

Any good keylogger will not appear when you hit CTRL/ALT/DEL. That's the point of a keylogger is to be invisible. There are admin task manager apps that will show you every process that is running on the system a good one will let you kill a specific process like the keylogger. You can also use the process to backtrack to the exe or dll running the logger and then hose it, since it is probably hidden and or encrypted you will have to use DOS to hose the file in the same way you would use DOS to zap those nasty history files MS hides on your system.

The simple solution is to install your own keylogger on the system first. When your parents install and check their keylogger you will have evidence on your logger.

Many hackers use keyloggers like wineggdrop, this is in essence a trojan which logs keystrokes and sends the data out through an open port to whoever knows how to listen. In this case a port monitor is necessary to observe the trojan at work. Clearly you are a noob so I don't advise you start putting on trojans on your own system but you asked how.
If you want to learn more about hacking and keylogging try happyhacker.org this is a noob friendly white hat hacker site. There is a ton of information here for any noob hacker.

Snoop unto them as they would snoop unto you!
