I haven't been 'online' very long, only about 4 years and i got into webmastering and the technical side almost straight away (chat rooms never interested me, went straight into IRC lol).
I sometimes hear stories about the good olddays, mid 90s, when the internet was a fun place full of really creative people, bbs boards and a like. When i hear these stories i wish i was around during this time, I would have loved to have experienced, or even paricipated in the birth of the internet.. But sadly it seems these times have gone, The internet is now a place to make money. You could do a search for practically any term and the first page will be entirely sites wanting money from you.
I have nothing against making money, I even try to do it myself sometimes, But i am bitter about the way this trend has caught on and exploded.
So what does this have to do with search engines? Well, Sites that rank welll now only rank well because of SEO, So indirectly search engines have forced people to start foocusing on thier sites position on search engines, and make the users experience secondary.
Don't get me wrong, there are still non-profit creative sites on the internet, but we usually only hear about then through word of mouth. How many people googled and found chucknorrisfacts.com? None. We were all told about it from a friend.
Anyway, that was just a little rant because it seems the "fun" internet has died, and it's only going to get worse. Bring back the days when people found websites by IP scanning on port 80!
