I was wondering if anyone was making any good money off of there sites? Im looking for a way to make some extra cash with maybe affiliating a product or two.
If you make money please share your story here. Like how much time it took to make the site and how much upkeep it takes and how much you make per month.
I tried to make some money with a site but I just didnt get any hits even after a years time so I shut the site down.

Hi. Yeah it’s very possible, and there are a lot of books and articles on the web available on the subject as well. The key points are if you are designing just to make money then find a topical topic, find what the peeps are searching for at the moment and build a site around it, get some adsense ads from google and add good regular content to keep em coming back.
And don’t use red font color for the majority of your site text.
Oh, and its their, not there. Must work on that too because people aren’t going to hang around as long if your sight is written badly.
There, that’s a rough outline. Its not too hard to start making a little bit of money, in fact the spyware topic you have on your site at the moment is quite a good one, but very competitive so you would really have to make an awesome site to set yours apart.

PKB moment, I think "site" is short for "website."
The point of this thread is to find a way to make money off of website activity and to receive a return on your investment.
Notice: I found a service that offers useful tools to use for your web businesses and also on the side earn you a little extra for helping others that show interest in these services for themselves.
Check it out here: http://gizmotron1.probuilderplus.com/?PAGE=2
I'm in the same boat with my Intuition project. I know that Intuition's single file format is better suited for some situations where a PDF wouldn't work as well. In the first few years of the PDF, experts offered their services to create PDFs and had their own websites supporting the services that they offered.
I propose to recreate websites from the internet and create examples of these websites in Intuition format. I'm looking for any webmasters that think their website would benefit from the exposure of having an Intuition version featured as an example. I will also work with any would-be experts that would like to offer programing services for creating Intuition files. An Intuition file could be a self contained website that could fit on an electronic business card CD ROM. So here is a topic that has not been exploited by many & that you could check out as an opportunity to earn from your computer time.
Best regards,
Mark

Yes, I'm finally making some money. After about 6 months of making *nothing*, yet spending hours of time scripting a website that wasn't even up, I've launched the site and am making $7+ per day from Google Adsense. We also should also be able to sell a few hundred dollars of text links soon.
To make money, my advice is:
- Put your life & soul into it for several months
- Don't be afraid to invest
- Either have unique, desired content, or a unique, desired service
Good luck!

Our Pyrotechnics company is doing pretty well. We're getting way more orders than we initially expected, still not enough to pay ourselves a salary yet but we're growing.

I need to start looking into this...I have a site that is getting 4000 unique visitors a month and increasing... Im guessing google adsense would be the best bet...I just dont feel comfortable giving out my social security number.....**** taxes...I have started looking into getting a federal tax ID number or EIN...Which I believe you can get if you have just a DBA (doing business as)...Anyone have any ideas on this?

You can get an EIN# by going to the irs.gov site. The link should take you right to the page for EIN's. I'm a sole proprietor without any employees at the moment, but was able to get a number with a relatively quick phone call. The phone # is in instructions for the form.
I got the number for the same reasons you want one; to use it instead of my SS# where possible. Seems most companies still want my SS#, but I have been able to substitute the EIN from time to time.

But how do you find a uniqu service or whatever? I mean have you looked at how many pages google has in there database?? Over 8 billion pages!
I'm getting very desperate for some way to make money now. We need it so bad even that 7.00 a day would be enough to keep us afloat.

Well you kind of already have a unique service...all you need now is lots of traffic...Consider re-doing your front page to have say news that pertains to the spy ware industry...update it daily or at least bi-weekly...This will help Google and other web crawlers find your site notice that it is active and then when people search for words found in your news your site will show up....Basic SEO and good SERP is what I'm talking about....
Basically you need more meat at the front end of your site...People don't want the bun they want the burger...haha...something like that

Wish I could say the same. But running a dedicated server (two soon) sure is costly!

Do you really think a site like I was running would make any where near that 7.00 from adds? I shut down the paid hosting because I wasnt even making enough money to keep the site up. Google or no search engines had me at the top spot even though I traded links and even got some 1 way links. I waited and waited over a year and still I had nothing. Over that time I only got like 30 bucks for a whole year....I spent hours on it learning how to work a site and got nothing in return.

Links are only half the battle if that even...
You need good content that is search engine friendly.....You need to write articles and then google and other search engines will find them and index them...then when people search for computer spy ware or what have you your site pops up...Links only make it so the SE know it is a rellivant site...the content is key...
CONTENT IS KING

So its not lack of links that keep you from top spots in SE's but lack of content?

It's a combination of a lot of things. There isn't one easy thing you can do to get traffic from search engines. A simplified version of the basics are:
1. Build a site that is easy for search engine spiders to crawl so they can index the site.
2. Write good content that is optimized for people and search engines and continue to add new content.
3. Get backlinks pointing to your site ideally from sites that are relevant to the topic of your site and the keywords you want to be ranked for.
There's a lot of detail in each of the three simplifed steps above and you really never stop working on them. 10 backlinks may be enough to get an optimized page ranked for one keyword and 1000 backlinks may not be enough for a different keyword. Even if you do manage to get that coveted #1 spot you still have to keep working because the sites sitting at #2, #3, #4, etc are working to knock you off the top.
And don't forget about getting traffic from other sources. Search engine traffic is great traffic to have, but it's not the only traffic.

This means no 100% flash only sites....
Flash was not ment to make a whole website but to add interactives, animations and so forth to sites...IMO

I agree. I'm not a big Flash user at all. I'll admit some of the nicest looking sites I've come across have been Flash sites, but once the initial 'wow' factor wore off I generally found the sites more difficult to use and slow loading.
I think search engines are much better at indexing Flash sites and there are things developers can do to make it easier for them, but I'm with you on not using 100% Flash sites at the moment.

I do not like flash at all. Its okay for vids and such as add on to sites but on dial up they are slow loading and anoying. I when I search want my information fast and am looking for the info not how the site looks as much. It doesnt matter to me if the info is on a blog with no special graphics as long as the info is good.
