MP3 players with claims that the gadgets, which typically are used with dime-sized, disc-shaped earphones called ear buds, can cause hearing loss.

one hour a day at about 60 percent volume was safe... sometimes it's really hard to resist, there are music that needs to pump it up...
sucks.. then why are manufacturers allowed to give listeners the option to pump it up to 120 decibels?

that's just lame..

that's the problem with our generation when everybody seems to be walking with earphones on.

I don't get the fascination with turning music up really loud. Sometimes you're on the train or something and someone's got earphones in and you can overhear it really clearly... but then they probably can't hear a thing due to distortion.
Some people have music systems in their cars that go so loud it would be dangerous to be in the car when the volume is at full whack. What's the point in that?
I think some people think it gives them 'street cred' to listen to certain types of music so they turn it up loud to let everyone else know what their listening to...

It's no different then car stereos and cd walkmans. If it hurts your ears, turn it down. It's as simple as that. Why do people have this need to blame the manufacturer for their stupidity. If the manufacturer wouldn't allow the ipod to past a "normal" safe volume, then you'd have people complaining it doesn't go loud enough.

For the same reason that your car is able to go 76 mph despite the highest speed limit in the United States being 75 mph. It is not the manufacturers' responsibility to ensure you have common sense. Are you suggesting that we legislate all dangerous or potentially dangerous behaviors out of existence and hold the manufacturers responsible for every negative event associated with a product? What would become of red meat, alcohol and pain medication? It is a patently absurd premise and one that reflects a sheltered existence where all your decisions are made for you.

Ive never really got on to the thing to have a bunch of subs in your car so all the mirrors shake. I hate being in cars when people turn the music up really loud.

I agree that the are some songs that just need to be turned up loud - but no hurt my head or ears loud. There are times that my daughter tells me to turn down the radio, which I find very amusing.

It is not something that can or should be legislated. If people are stupid enough to listen to sound that loud going directly into thier ears, then they deserve to damage their ears. The damage doesn't occur painlessly and pain is a warning sign of damage. These are probably the same people that commit other self-destructive behavior. It's not the government's job to be our parents.

So what's the problem? Just don't set it too high.

Well, there is a "sound check" feature on the iPod, but not sure how well it fits in with the above.

As for me, I've got some really expensive etymotic research 6i headphones, which cancel out enough of the background noise for me to listen at 30-40% very comfortably! Treat yourself!

The problem with lower volume is you cannot enjoy the music if you will do this.
Also if you're on a crowded place you cannot hear the song if the volume is low.

True, but even in a crowded place it's easy to find a volume level where you can hear the music perfectly well without disturbing other people. Some of the people that I come across with their music up so loud (in cars, on trains, etc) must have some serious hearing problems if they can't hear the music at a lower level... and I just don't beleive that many people could have that much of a hearing impairment. Funny thing is they're all young as well... it's usually when you get old that your hearing starts to go.

As I said before, it's just a fashion thing really. People want everyone else to know what they're listening to, so they turn it up.

I'm gonna butt in with my wonderful headphones once again - I can listen to music 3/4 of the ipod volume (which is very loud) without others being able to hear more than a very faint noise - nothing at all on a train, in a street etc.

i listen to music while working, but i make sure that the noise is low, plus if i hear a song too loud for long my ears start to hurt.
I also read somewhere that the number of bacteria in your ear canal increase by about 200% if you are listening to music with headphones for a hour at a stretch.
