OK, heres a question for you all:

I'm planning to reformat one of my computers soon, and need to decide on an OS for it. I'm planning on either installing Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP (please don't suggest linux, this needs to be a Windows machine!)

Now, these two operating systems are quite similar. I've looked at the pros and cons of both which are below:

Reasons to Choose XP
* Most recent consumer OS, therefore more people developing software for it/could be better written/more patches available
* Different to standard windows interface
* Probably more stable than 2K

Reasons to Choose 2K
* More control over computer - less of those annoying 'You may damage your computer if you look in this folder' boxes
* Less resource intensive
* Continuity between computers

So has anyone got any other reasons for/against each OS. At the moment I'm probably going to go for 2K, but you might be able to change my mind!

Well, all I have to add is that I have been using XP Professional for over a year now and It has never crashed on me. Every once in awhile I'll IE do something funny though.

umm i would go with Windows XP i have been using XP Pro since just after it was released and the only crashes i have ever had with are after overclocking attempts gone bad...

You can slao make XP less resource intensive by turning off most of the n00bish bits...

I have been using XP since it was brand new. Now I have to admit at first I hated it, but the only reason was because the buggs were still not worked out for it. But now everything runs like a dream.

The thing about XP that it is basiclly just a userfriendly 2000. You still have all the options to change things, the networking is more friendly while still remaining solid.

Go with xp you will not be sad.
