During the time of lent you are supposte to make sacrifices for God. Not eating meat and fasting are 2 of them.

I just want to know if it is or not a sin in the Roman Catholic Church?

Maybe a forum built specifically for Roman Catholics, or christianity in general, would be of more use.. WE mainly bow down to the coding gods here

That rule was changed years ago. Local option of the Bishop now. They discuss those kind of things at Sunday services.

You know, even though I'm not Roman Catholic, I can relate. Don't feel bad because it may happen at times. Or even if you go to some Mexican Restaurants and end up realizing there's meat in the beans (bacon) and many other instances. I don't think he would punish you for that if you did not know .

Go to confession. If the priest starts laughing, you know you're good. If not, you're still covered.

honestly, lent is a church made up practice, there is nothing in the bible that says you should do lent (it never even speeks of such a thing).

well that's because everyone should pay a sacrifice for God. Not eating meat, is a way of making a small sacrifice for God.

Okay - my husband was brought up Roman Catholic and for a few years we sent my daughter to a Catholic school (I was brought up & remain Methodist, my husband insists he's an aethist but in his heart he isn't).

The season of Lent was brought about for you to remember the life of Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us. Part of showing both to God & to your fellow man that you are remembering is for you yourself to make a sacrifice.

The other people here are right that THE church made up the rule of no meat on Friday during Lent. However, the premise behind the rule was to force people to sacrifice during Lent.

If you are a Christian and you honor the words of the Bible & the teachings of Jesus then eating meat on Friday was not a sin - whether you did it fully aware or not.

While my daughter was attending Catholic school, I approached the parish preist and asked him if this was an appropriate thing to teach my daughter in light of the fact that she was being raised in a multi-denominational home and he assured me that it was most acceptable.

Hope this rather long answer gives you some peace!

I think you have not done this purposely, it happened accidently. God will surely forgive you for this.

Only God defines what is and isn't a sin. I've read the Bible. Not only does it say nothing about eating meat (accidentally or not) being a sin, but it specifically says that God made the animals of the world so that man would "have dominion" over them.

Just because a Bishop says something is a sin doesn't mean it is. I would venture to say that any Bishop/Priest/Pope/Paster/Preacher who says that he can is himself committing a sin.

Being a former Catholic and non Christian who went through both Catholic grade and high school, it was a mortal sin to eat meat on Friday and during Lent when it was specified, if one didn't confess this in confession or make an act of contrituition one could go directly to hell when one died. During this period of time Mexico didn't have this rule like the US, which at the time as a young girl I thought the whole world abided by this rule, no meat on Friday.

This rule is not by God but a Church rule and must be abided by if one is to follow and practise the Catholic Church.

Times and rules have drastically changed since my time, but I wouldn't worry Jyoz22, even in my day if you forgot, this was forgiven, but if you deliberately ate meat on Friday or other days when specified then you were in trouble.
