Now you see this is a tough question are we talkin best overall ever game or best current game...even then it's tough...
I remember way back when, when you could literally buy every game that was out for any given system or even the "computer"....Today not only can you not buy them all but you could never play them all...Rather amazing if you think about it...
anyways back to the topic...
Current Fav is Battlefield 2 (well I have liked the whole Battlefield series and all its mods, it's like 20 games for the price of one, oh and the link in my sig tells all)
All time
Grandtheft Auto (even when it was pixels, top down view, it was wicked fun)
However if anyones a Star Wars fine I highly recommend Star Wars Empire at War. Just got it and it's def worth it, one of the best RTS games I have ever played.
and thats my 2 cents

I've got virtually the entire series of Unreal games for PC, have played the original single player through several times on the hardest level and STILL find new secrets along the way. I've messed around building maps for UT99, UT2003 and UT2004.
I played descent 1 and 2 a lot, and played around with the map editor for those. Played descent 3 but dind't find it as good.
I enjoyed the early star wars games, such as the original TIE-fighter, dark forces and jedi-knight I, but the newer games based on the new films aren't so good.
I've played most of the way through final fantasy 7, but mostly I like the FF games for the music - the composer Nobuo Uematsu is a genius! I've since learnt to play several of the pieces of music from Final fantasy 4 up to final fantasy 9.
