The phone rang as I was sitting down to my evening meal, and as I answered
it I was greeted with "Is this Karl Brummer". Not sounding anything like my
name, I asked who is calling. The telemarketer said he was with The Rubber
Band Powered Freezer Company or something like that. Then I asked him if he knew Karl personally and why was he calling this number. I then said off to the
side, "get some pictures of the body at various angles and the blood smears",
I then turned back to the phone and advised the caller that he had entered a
murder scene and must stay on the line because we had already traced this
call and he would be receiving a summons to testify in this murder case.

I questioned the caller at great length as to his name, address, phone
number at home, at work, who he worked for, how he knew the dead guy and could he prove where he had been about one hour before he made this call. The telemarketer was getting very concerned and his answers were given in a shaky voice.

I then told him we had located his position and the police were entering the
building to take him into custody, at that point I heard the phone fall and
the scurrying of his running away.

My wife asked me as I returned to our table why I had tears streaming down
my face and so help me, I couldn't tell her for about fifteen minutes. My meal
was cold, but it was the best meal in a long, long time.

I love talking with telemarketers, or having fun with them. I've never heard this one, but may just try it out.

That's a good one. I like having fun with them too. The best I ever did was when a local paper called for what seemed like the millionth time in a week to sell me a subscription. I insisted I couldn't read and then proceeeded to use the largest words I have in my vocabulaty to reiterate the point that I was illiterate. I completely threw the telemarketer off her script and never heard from them again.

All you have to do is find something that doesn't have an answer in the script they use and they immediatley lose their train of thought and get thrown off with what to say next. It's a lot of fun.

I'm on the do not call list now so I don't get any calls anymore except for automated calls. I've been toying with the theory that a combination of the right numbers and the tones they send could mess with the system, but I'm still working on that. I dream of the possiblilty where the right combination will give me access to the menu that can program the message.

Just leave the phone off the hook until the message ends. Then they pay for the entire call.

I have way too much fun talking with them. You don't have to be rude or obnoxious, but you can have fun with them by giving them answers that don't fit their script.

Here's one of my conversations:

Telemarketer: May I speak to DaveMo~?
DaveMo~: Hold on and I'll get him.
...after about a minute and a half...
DaveMo~:Hello?
Telemarketer: Is this DaveMo~
DaveMo~: Yes, it is.
Telemarketer: Well Dave, this is blah blah from blah blah calling to inform you that you have won a free vacation to a destination of your choice for 3 days and 4 nights. Isn't that wonderful? (asked in excited tone)
DaveMo~:
(in non-excited voice) I don't like vacations.
Telemarketer: But this is a free vacation, just for you. Isn't that great?
DaveMo~: Nope, I don't like vacations.
Telemarketer: Well, if you could go anywhere in the U.S. that you wanted for vacation, where would you go? (still excitement in the voice)
DaveMo~: I'd go to my next door neighbor's house?
Telemarketer: (the excitement is not there, now bewilderment) You'd go to your neighbor's house for a free vacation?
DaveMo~: Yes.
Telemarketer: May I ask why'd you would go there?
DaveMo~: Yes, 'cause if I wasn't having fun, and I don't have fun because I don't like vacations, I could just walk back to my house and it would be over.
Telemarketer: So you really don't like vacations? (bewildered!)
DaveMo~: That's what I've been trying to tell you.
Telemarketer: Well, it seems that I really can't do anything to help you.
DaveMo~: I tried to tell you that I don't like vacations.
Telemarketer: You have a nice day. And if you have any questions, please call 1-800-xxx-xxxx.
DaveMo~: If I don't like vacations, now why would I want to call that number. Besides, you said it way too fast.
Telemarketer: You have a nice day, sir.
DaveMo~: You too, bye.
...end of call...

Now I'm sure I made that guy's day! It sure made mine alot better! I just can't wait until the next call and make something else up!

Dave

That's a good one Dave. So much fun and it probably kept some other person from getting a call that day.

Now that's one of the most useful links I've come across in a long time.

PUahaha..you guys have some interesting ideas. i used to work for a telemarketing company many years ago. of course there is a script, but there are other rules as well. one, for example, is that you cannot hang up the call until the other party does first.

i remember this one instance, where a lady answered the phone and claimed she was the president of the united states. she had that line tied up for about 15 minutes until she decided whe wanted to speak w/ the supervisor. then the super had his hands full for another 30 min until he could get her off the phone. it was a total waste of time. lol. very frustrating for telemarketers. haha.

Funny. That's kind of my idea sometimes. I figure if I don't mind spending the time having a little fun then I would save a couple of other people from getting a call during the day by keeping the link tied up.

I always thought it was a 3 'no' policy or something like that.
