COMMENTS: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

A very good point! there's far too much tax nowardays. Must remember, though, that some of these wouldn't have been around 100 years ago becuse driving and telephones etc. wern't commonplace:

I know why so many ride the tram in the UK now.

Or maybe the cars are more fuel efficient.

When I first went to Germany, I was trying to figure out how much the gas was in US dollars. After figuring it out, I was amazed that it was about the same as home in the US. Then the guy told me it was a liter, not a gallon. Ouch!

Yes, taxes are too high! In the U.S., Seattle tried to create a tax on lattes, but the voters nixed it!
