hypothetical - say someone has my credit card #, name, address, etc.
How exactly would they go about making online/B&M purchases with the
said CC# while managing to remain unidentified?
I ask because a friend of mine ordered a dozen roses for his
girlfriend's birthday a while back, and recently had $400 deducted from
his checking account from some guy in Russia. Though in his case, his
debit card had been exploited, but I assume the same logic applies to
credit cards.

How would one go about covering their tracks ensuring a clean getaway?
My inquiring mind wants to know...

I don't know, really.

I would think it would be dreadfully easy as long as the thief didn't send the goods to his own address. Sending them to a P.O. box would solve the problem.

That is what I figured. Finding out one of my friends had this happen to him has made me a little paranoid concerning my online transactions, especially with smaller companies who keep track of CC info. But I guess there isn't much an end user can do about such things.

Sadly it's not as hard as it should be. If they ordered online they probably hid their ip through a variety of proxy servers and as Chroder mantioned have whatever they ordered shiiped to an address that wasn't there own.

They could also have just used the card to pay for something that didn't require an actual shipment of something so an address wasn't necessary.
