hey people...
Guess the title is a bit exaggerated but just wanted each one of you to contribute atleast 5 great things that one could do on the internet. I am sure we could come out with a long list of not a million
Well to start with me :
5 best things :
1. Web Designing : - Its my passion (My website http://www.alchemy-education.com )
2. Gaming : - Everyone likes that
3. Wikipedia : - This is an awesome site . Am sure all of you agree.
4. Gmail : - surely revolutionising the way we use email
5. Hanging out at Forums :- All of us like Webmaster-Talk Right !

In the interest of listing 5 different things:
1) Creating web design ideas and coding techniques that may not have been tried before. Not just web design, but web code creation in a sense.
2) Fantasy sports leagues (in my case, a fantasy baseball sim league I belong to at http://ootp.haymakerhockey.net ). I don't really consider this "gaming" in the conventional sense since there aren't any joysticks or real-time killing situations or things like that.
3) Dating sites. I have a girlfriend, so I don't go on there to pick up. I just love reading some of the profiles because they're incredibly lame.
4) http://www.homestarrunner.com . Strong Bad. Greatest cartoon character EVER.
5) Becoming an ordained minister. http://www.ulc.org/catalog/ministryinabox-p-127.html . Still the funniest "legit" thing I've found online.

1) Keeping in touch with family - we have a family website where family from across the globe posts news, pics, etc.
2) Read - I don't know how I would stay informed of new tech develpments as well as world news if I couldn't read it online when ever I had time!!
3) Clean out my house - my husband is continually buying junk and in self-defense I have to sell it on ebay just so that I can move through my house.
4) Let my kids spread their wings - My son is a member here and my daughter likes to im her friends (since she is only 11 there is a key logger installed so I know who she talks to and what they say)
5) Exercise my fingers - by typing code, posts, searches, etc.

Well I do that sometimes too. Buying the actual versions of software can be very expensive. ( http://www.astalavista.us)
Read - well thats something I would really add to my list. Have learned so many new things from the Internet.

Googlewhacking is where you type any two words into google in an attempt to return only 1 result. There are rules, suh as both words have to be included in the dictionary that Google uses (they appear as links in the top right of your search results so you can check that easily)
VPN is incredibly usefull - VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. I can create a virtual connection to my network at home from anywhere on the internet and remote control all my computers at home over that connection. Right now I'm at work, but I've got a VPN to my home and remote controlling my desktop computer using Remote Desktop. That way whatever I do on the internet doesn't show up on the firewall logs at work . And the best part of it is all the utils you need are included in WinXP.

I do a similar thing via ssh with X11 tunneling (if desired)
I find running X apps slow from my home box so normally I just ssh into it and do whatever from the shell. You can pipe VNC via ssh so you get the full X11 desktop running but this too is resource and bandwidth hungry adn its a much better option to tunnel X11 instead.
How does VPN hold up, is it too slow or is it acceptable?

Can't think of five right now, but Minaki, remember you're not entirely invincible to the company proxy! Whilst they won't be able to view "websites by user", with a raw access log examiner (freely available) they could see which traffic your username's been receiving (worded appallingly I know...) unless of course you've taken the liberty of encrypting it

The speed of the VPN is fine most of the time, we've got a fat connection at work (cos we run web servers in house) and 4Meg broadband at home. It does slow down sometimes if my housemates are downloading stuff, but I fixed that by prioritising my traffic on our router.
Yes, the VPN is encrypted. And I know that there's no traffic sniffing going on... they're not that clever in this company...
