I happened to stumble accross an old thread on HighRankings in which the Administrator, Jill, Posed an interesting question.

The question asked was this;
If you found a way to get a guarenteed top 10 place every time in google with any site, But by using a method that would be considered search engine spam, Would you do it?

It's not possible as far as i know, It's a hypothetical question.

I would aslo do it, In a second, And i don't believe that anyone who says they wouldn't are telling the truth. I don't see any good reason to not do it..

So you'd get a top position in the SE, but you risk getting caught and permanantly banned all together.

I'd rather be placed 100th for the life of the site then be placed top 10 for a month and then have my site banned. Now, if there was no chance of repercussion for spamming the SE then I'd do it.

You wouldn't get banned. Search engines, Your client and your competitors would never know. I guess it could be a question of morals, But i don't know what moral obligation we have to our competitors.

I would really really like to say that I wouldn't, but... If no one would ever know, then sure. It is a moral question, but since when did morals play any big role in business?

I guess it also depends on how the trick worked. I wouldn't go and send out 10,000 fake emails about starving kids in Uganda, my morals meter would explode

So I'm kinda on the fence with this one.

Most definately.

Remember just coz you may not do it does not mean all will be like minded. So stick to "do it before they do" and you will be fine.

But saying that good titles and keywords along with an alf decent link exchange should get you up there.

One problem....Once it got out it would spread like wildfire and everyone would do it causing it to nullify itself....

It's a hypothetical question, It's not bound by what may or may not have happened in the past with other SEO spam.

But seriously, If anyone is worried about taking money from thier competition they are totally in the wrong business,, Because take it from me, Your competition would bury you right now if they had the chance, so don't be losing any sleep over taking thier visitors and sales, Whatever method you use.

If it works, and has no repercussions, Do it.. Before they do.

I would prefer If there was a way to stop this happening. Other wise people who choose to spam have an unfair advantage. Think how anoying it is when it happens to you. I'm not sure if I would.

I would not do this, even if everyone said, "you can't get caught". Someone once told me that about napster and other file sharing sites. Eventually, people got caught. The fact of the matter is this: When you start messing with other people's money, they eventually catch you.

For some, this "make a ton of money and run" idea may be ok. For me, it is not. I am not only a webmaster. I also work full time, and take care of our household. Thus, every dime that comes into my website goes into a few funds that are earmarked for things like:

Our children's college funds.
Emergency Money
Retirement

For these reasons, I cannot risk losing this small but steady stream of income on some serp scheme. When the money becomes useful in one of these instances, I will be very glad that I played by the rules and kept the money coming in for the long haul.

I will get off my soap box now. :P

Ok, stOx.

I realize this is a well defind, mythical dreamland question that you pose. In this mythical dreamland, perhaps yes. Then, in the event that a problem arose, I could snap my fingers and make a money tree grow in my back yard. And then I could click my heels together and be whisked away to another mythical dreamland when it all catches up to me.

In the real world, absolutely not. If the internet has taught me anything, it is that NOTHING IS FOOL PROOF.
