I've been learning all about subject lines this past week, and I was just wondering if you folks could share your favorite subject line strategy for sending out email newsletters. I've heard that some people disguise their content by using vague subject lines (does this personally annoy you?).

With all you experts in here, there's gotta be some really good secrets behind using subject lines to your advantage. So come on... let's show off a little

If it's an email NEWSLETTER that I've subscribed to, then there's no need to make vague subject lines. I usually find that vague subject lines are spam, not newsletters. Those do annoy me and usually end up in the spam folder.

If you send me a vague subject line I'm going to assume it's spam and never open the email. If it's an email newsletter all I need is the name of the newsletter. If you want give me an issue number or a date. Anything else is unnecessary. And that assumes I've actually subscribed to the newsletter. If I haven't it's spam.

I mark it as spam if i don't know what it is.
It if says "somesites newsletter" and i have subscribed to somesites newslettter i read it, If i haven't subscribed i spam it regardless of what the subject is..

Tricking people is never a good tactic.

A subject line should simply reflect what this e-mail is about. As stated above, if it's a newsletter, it should simply be 'Whatever's Newsletter' maybe with the title of the main articl, if there's room.

I give more importance to e-mails that I want to read, determind by the subject line. If I can't determine the importance of an e-mail by it's subject line, it gets less credibility.

If the e-mail does happen to end up in spam, and I'm scanning through loads and loads of subject lines for e-mails I actually want, a vague subject line is far more likely to be skipped over and deleted with the rest of the junk.

It seems that the majority of people don't like tricky or vague subject lines. Most agree that it's a cover up for spam.

So what about that last part? How do you use subject lines to your advantage? Or are we still talking about tricking people into opening their email?

When I send out newsletters, it usually says the name of the newsletter and the number or volumn or date. Sometimes it may include something of interest that's contained within, but it would be very short (like the sitetitle Volleyball News: Season starts Soon!).
