McAfee I bought their anti virus program, but they pester the hell out of me to buy their firewall etc. Does anyone have a better alternative than CA?

Quicktime and Flash I don't want them. I have uninstalled them. Yet somehow quicktime is back, and yahoo is managing to use macromedia to animate their ads, thus avoiding my firefox ad blocker. Quicktime has even inserted itself in the tray at the bottom right of my screen. How can I keep them out?

Programs that load themselves on boot. WTF. I see IPodService.exe and iTunesHelper.exe, and god knows what the rest of those .exe file are. They show as processes on my task manager. I don't even have an IPod. As far as I am concerned, this stuff is spam. Any suggestions?

Works well. Just for others who read this, also run services.msc

Besides SEO, I think Flash is awesome. 2advanced.com is amazing and visionary.

The flash plugin for your browser is likely automatic. Unless you get the flashblock extension for FF you're not going to be able to block flash ads.

Do you have Itunes ? It will load the ipodservice automatically and iTunes installs Quicktime. You can set quicktime NOT to show in your tray or load when Windows starts up.

AVG Free...get that AV program. It rocks the science. And it's free. Free. Totally free. Did I mention it's free? Oh yeah...it's free!

The i* software generally doesn't install itself. Someone has to be consciously aware of it and install it for you (as was previously mentioned, someone with an iPod). You get rid of it, you'll probably also kill QuickTime as well.

It sounds like too many people are using your computer besides just you, or that you're doing too many things with it and not being aware of the consequences (usually it's the former, occasionally the latter, once in a while it's both.)

Although if you install QuickTime and don't read very carefully, you also install iTunes and the Apple Updater. Unfortunately I've had to work with the QT Player in a client app for somebody ... it can be a bit invasive.

Here is some advice I emailed to friends. Understand that I am 69, and so are my friends, so very few of them have a clue. Its kind of elementry for you folks, but you never know who you might help, and its already written out.

All the following are excellent products and are free for your (noncomercial) use.
You can download them and follow the install instructions on the screen.

If you are paying for an Anti Virus, you want AVG and click on "free version". Its way better than mcaffee or norton in my opinion, and free is a good price. It updates against new threats daily instead of weekly. It also uses less of your memory while its working. Best of all, they will not drive you crazy when its renewal time.

A free excellent anti spyware program is AdAware

An excellent and free firewall is Zone Alarm. Click the download button which you find here

The best deal on the Internet is Firefox It just blows away Internet Explorer.
Firefox has some amazing "add ons".
It comes with a first rate popup blocker.
Ad blocker does what it says. Install it with any one of the pre-made blacklists. You will not see any more ads, unless they are flash adds.
Flash blocker takes care of the rest of the adds, which are really movies. If you want to see the movie, just click the "F" button and it shows immediately.
Reminder is a to do list that saves my life often: birthdays, oil changes, tax payments, golf dates......

The best "home page" on the web is Yahoo's, but you are going to have to customize it. First create an account. The rest is pretty much laid out for you. When you log on, you are taken to your home page. Customizing the yahoo page is an amazing experience. For instance, Once you give them your zip code, they list the movie times are in all the theaters in your area. Tell them your cable company, and you get the whole TV lineup. Tell them what cities you want weather for, and you get it. I also get the six top headlines from AP and from Reuters. How about 1 white pages search box and 1 yellow pages search box. Just a few other features I personally get is the snow report for some of my favorite ski mountains, a euro, yen, dollar table, and of course my stocks. ALL WITH ONE MOUSE CLICK, AND NO ADDS.

Most e-mails are about the same. A good one is Yahoo, and that has the benefit of showing up on your yahoo home page. I use gmail, a Google product. Its very different, and I'm not sure which is better, but gmail is way cooler. You can only get a gmail account by invitation. If you would like, let me know as there are about 20 invitations left on my account.

If you install ad aware, you need to run it every once in a while. Just click on the icon. It will take care of the rest. Everything else recommended is a no brainer.

Another thing you should run periodically is your disk defragmenter.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disc Defragmenter .... JUST DO IT.

Naturally, I take no responsibility for anything written here. If your computer blows up, don't call me. However if you doubt me, just ask your teenage grandson about this advice.

Disk Defrag isn't necessary really on modern computers. Modern hard drives are very fast so the difference you'll see is negligible. You should probably run it once in a while but unless your computer is 5 or 6 years old, it's not really necessary to run it once a week or whatever.

I have a few recommendations of my own (THESE ARE ALL FREE):

1) Download and install KeyScrambler - the personal version is free. It CAN protect you against keyloggers by replacing the letters they record with random letters (encrypting). Just look at the review here. This is definitely useful against commercial keylogging software which your family/boss may have installed on your computer to see what your up to. It takes up barely any resources at all but it is very effective at encrypting your keystrokes to logins.

2) You need an anti-spyware program running in real-time. Ad-Aware SE Personal does not provide Real-Time protection - that is it does not protect you while you are using the computer, it is only able to scan your computer when you tell it to and remove things then. I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy to keep your registry in order and of course with Windows Defender.

3) Blocking spyware - this is a must! Download Spyware Blaster - a great program that blocks cookies from rogue web sites and blocks Active X based spyware. This does not run in real time but instead adds a list of known spyware cookies/Active X controls to Firefox and Internet Explorer's blocking list so you are easily protected. All you need to do is update the program once every 2 weeks and then go about your normal business.

4) Tweak Now Registry Cleaner - ok so this isn't a security product but it can help speed up startup and general computer usage. Some programs do not delete the traces they have left in the registry after they have been uninstalled, so your computer takes longer while searching and attempting to load these. Tweak Now searches for traces that do not go anywhere and deletes them. BE CAUTIOUS USING THIS PRODUCT - DELETING THE WRONG REGISTRY ENTRIES COULD CAUSE YOUR COMPUTER TO NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY!

5) The firewall. Everyone these days seems to use ZoneAlarm but I favour an underdog - Comodo Firewall. Comodo are a company that make security certificates for web sites. Unlike ZoneAlarm basic which is a cut down version of their premium firewall, Comodo Personal Firewall is their only firewall product so you get all of the features, rather than a cut down version! This firewall was tested against thousands of hacker exploits and not a single one passed it. It thrashes many paid firewalls including Norton Personal Firewall and it beats ZoneAlarm too. It is an extremely zealous product which informs you (sometimes too much) when programs try to access the internet. It can be configured to stop asking about particular programs and I recommend turning the warning message level down to low or very low unless you want popups all of the time. I believe it is probably the best firewall program out there - doing for free what paid firewall programs can't!

6) PC Security Test - this is an absolute MUST! It is a free program that tests how effective your antivirus, antispyware and firewall actually are. Not only this, but it comes with a section showing what hackers could do to your computer including ejecting your cup holder Very fun! Lol.

As the guy above said, I'm not responsible if you misinterpret this info or if your computer goes wrong, but I seriously believe these programs can greatly improve your security on the net!

Oh one last one before I forget, McAfee SiteAdvisor. I'm generally not a fan of McAfee but SiteAdvisor is very very good! The product is a plugin for IE and Firefox and can tell you when sites are suspected scams, have spyware/virus downloads or when compromise browser security. The product is made so good by the thousands of members who contribute info on sites and share their experiences. Members are measured by a reputation from 0/9 to 9/9 to tell you whether to trust a member or not. Sites are also reviewed by the McAfee SiteAdvisor staff.

I just wanted to repeat your warning. I don't like the idea of auto fixer cleaner programs like this, personally. Worries me too much to use it. But if you're gonna, you should make a backup of your registry right beforehand.

Yep very true. Make sure you have made a backup first - breaking the registry CAN be like flushing your computer down the toilet...!
