I just launched my site a month ago. For the first couple of weeks it had frames (for simplicity) and was much uglier than it is now. It's still not that great, but I'm still learning and trying to make it as presentable as possible.

Anyway, I was wondering how many visitors/pageviews is typical for being a month old. It barely registers on search engines and I haven't done anything to actively promote it, mostly because until a day or two ago I didn't feel it had enough content to warrant any attention. The only links I have to it are in forum sigs, the one here and at another place where I only posted twice to ask a question.

It seems to be doing okay so far, but I see people talking about a million hits per month or tens of thousands of hits per day and it just seems hard to imagine such astronomical figures in comparison.

Don't believe in all those things. Don't lose hope and just do what you think is best for your site. Good luck.

It is possible to have tens of thousands of hits per day. I got that on just one page after releasing RIP Steve Irwin Online Memorial to the public but that soon slowed down after the mourning died down.

There's two types of startups:

1. You get ALOT of visitors and it soon dies down to form a solid community (like the concept of a volcano huh? Explosive website

)

2. You have no visitors and have to build up and gradually it gets a solid traffic income

Chris give it some time. Like you said it's not visible in search engines yet and you have only just started promoting it. It's possible to get quite a lot of traffic to a site, but usually it takes time. Rich was able to get a lot of traffic to a page quickly by putting up a page with a lot of timely interest. Steve Irwin's passing will certainly not be the only news event that can draw traffic.

More tyically you'll grow slowly at first with occasional spikes in traffic after publishing a really good article or maybe you generate some buzz.

Just keep getting the word out there about your site. Even slow growth is still growth. Don't worry if the spikes don't come. If you keep improving traffic by 10-20% each month you'll have a lot more visitors a year from now.

Thanks, Steve. I've got high hopes and a few ideas to increase traffic once I feel the site is ready. It only feels about half done, and until I learn more about PHP and MySQL adding content is about all I can do. Still, as long as I break even on hosting I'll be fine, and WT has done a lot to make that reality closer thanks to the traffic it's provided and the AdShare program. I figure that once I get current and future hosting covered for at least a couple of months I'll start donating a portion of my revenue to charity. If things keep going the way they have been that might be as soon as next month.
