You'd need to buy a license from ASCAP or BMI.

@the OP: Don't do it, it isn't worth it. You probably can't afford to do it legally and you definately can't afford to do it illegally.

@ultra: It's totally illegal, and that little disclaimer won't help you one bit when the suits come knocking. You either need to buy a license or only distribute songs from bands that give you their express consent to distribute their works (like local/underground bands that want to get the word out). The penalties might be a little different since you live in another country (your looking at tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in civil damages in the US), but I can guarantee that nothing good will come of it. You might try approaching some local artists about including their music, though, as I'm sure there are more than a few that would love the exposure and you would still get to offer music to your visitors. Everybody wins.

what about old opera or old classical?

As long as the producer of the song died more than 70 years ago, any restrictions are lifted.
I think that is right?
That's the case with art and designs.

This is a question you're just not going to get the answer to on here, since there are cases where it is legal and cases where it isn't illegal.

For example, one of my clients offers downloads of up to 2-minute samples from songs from CDs he's trying to sell. However, he's a reseller of the product and has permission to do so, and he never puts up the full song (it takes money out of his pocket anyway.) But in most cases, it's against the law.

My suggestion to you would be to take a trip over to FlashKit and see if you can find something that would work.

Your answer MIGHT also be here (I emphasize might because Wikipedia is completely full of crap most of the time):
