I'm planning to definitely register a domain.

My top three choices are:

1and1
Yahoo
Godaddy

I've heard that 1and1 is a bad domain provided, though its very cheap at $6.00 a year.

I wonder if there are better prices and overall reliability.

Also I use www.awardspace.com to host my files, its a free service. Are there any other free service like it?

-When registering a domain, lets say www.mydomain.com, can I make it so that I can add other names such as forums.mydomain.com , help.mydomain.com etc/?? What features should I be looking for when purchasing a domain?

There are hundreds of domain registrars around the globe, personally I stay well away from the big names because their customer support of often poor. Never buy on price alone, you buy cheap you get cheap.

If you want urls like forums.mydomain.com you need a host that support subdomains, this is pretty much a standard hosting feature nowadays.

Yes you can add forum.yourdomain.com, anything.yourdomain.com, ect. It is called subdomain and most hosting providers have the features.

Most people looking for price (unless you have no problem with $$$) and uptime when purchasing a hosting.

When purchasing a domain?... it's up to you. Pick the domain name according to the keywords of your site or business.

I like GoDaddy. It's cheap, the customer service is excellent, and I've never had any service problems. If you get hosting with them you can get a domain for $2. Hell, $9 will get you a domain, a month of hosting (100GB storage, 1TB transfer, unlimited websites), and a $25 AdWords promo code.

I think you should have created different nominations: Shared hosting, Reseller hosting, VPS, Dedicvated server, Managed dedicated server, Colocation.
My IMO:
Shared hosting - www.hostgator.com (The biggest and the best)
Reseller hosting - www.ahosting.biz (Provide quality service, have heard a lot of goos thinks)
VPS - www.vpshosting.net (the biggest one)
Dedicated server - www.hostpulse.com
