So i'm looking for a new job in a different city and naturally they ask for some references. I call/contact a few people via email and one person really struck a nerve with me.

i've done a lot of design and graphics work for the site ls1.com a muscle car forum. I've felt like i've gotten to know the admin really well even though we're a continent apart, b/c i've basically bent over backwords for him to give him various designs [home page, logo, doign a car calendar now for him; this was all done pro bono] So i asked him for his contact information so that I could use him as a reference and he said "i would, but i don't give out my personal info, sorry." I'll tell you...the freakin' NERVE this dude has!?!?!

Right now I'm down to the wire on a photoshoot for his calendar and he's basically relying on me to make it happen for him. I seriously feel like saying "you're screwing me over, now i won't finish your calendar!"

kinda venting, but what do you people think?

I would not complete the project for him. The least, very least he could do is give you a solid reference. People like this really get my goat. If he gives you a reference and you get the job, he losses a pro bono guy. And that is pretty ****ty if you ask me. You paid your dues and it time to move on. He is a classic HATER.

PS. I had the samething happen to me.

well, i've decided to be a man about it and finish my job. the calendar is all user submitted images of their girls with their cars and frankly i'd be letting down A SH!T LOAD of people if i just tossed it away, damaging relationships with potential clients; so i'm gonna finish it to safe face. But this will be the absolute last thing i ever do for this place. Wow, i'm really pissed about this.

Can you give the guy's email address for the reference info? I know you really are supposed to have a phone or address. Maybe he could write a referral letter for you? Something??? I mean, he doesn't have to give all his personal info over the internet, but he could at least do something.

it's too late, my frustration with his calendar project got the best of me and i bascially flipped out and said a lot of stuff that a week from now i will be hitting myself for saying.

Oh well. it's a principle thing...really.

giving company contact info for future employers is not personal info. Sounds like he was just being "tough"

This was the way to handle it. It's not worth burning any bridges over, but I certainly wouldn't do any more free work for him.

Finish your calender but then leave him cold, he'll miss you soon.
