Hi,
i want to know why do some sites (using my school as example.)
http://www.greendown.swindon.sch.uk works and u get the crap sorry i mean the school site.

but if u got to
http://greendown.swindon.sch.uk u get nothing.

Why does this happen? is it to do with server config or somin? someone please explain.
i have noticed a few sites which are like this.

i believe, and not sure at all - just a very very very random guess, that its got to do with your website hosting or your computer settings.

Its got to do with how subdomains are handled in the web server (Apache) setup

it can be two things
1 - DNS: both "domain.com"and www.domain.com should be set up
2 - Webserver config: Webserver should be configured to respond to both "domain.com"and www.domain.com

In both cases, its a sign of bad webmastering.

1 - the webmaster should have set it up correctly (if he have access to do that=
2 - the webmaster should inform the webhost or domainhost about the error.

To find out if its a webserver or DNS problem, you can simply ping it.

If you can ping(or get them to resolve to the IP) both with and without WWW, then its the webserver.

I know, i get extreamally annouyed about this when someone tells me to go to a site and i have to then RE-type the URL becasue of this.

Thanks for explaining it, i shall email the admin of my school site with ur responses. see if they can be botherd to do anything about it.

I wonder if it is a school thing. My school's site www.ucok.edu only works when you type the www at the beginning. It is really annoying!

No i think what it is is the stupid people who call them selves technitions are told we want a server so they do it but dont atually know how to make it good lol..

lol maybe i have emailed the school with what ebusdk said see if i get a response
lol i might they might get off they backsides and find out how to do the wil prob ignore it like all my other emails...
