Guess again -- most users aren't aware (I certainly wasn't) that the NSA (National Security Agency) secretly built into Windows special access codes prepared by the US National Security Agency -- a careless mistake by MicroSTOOPID programmers ... Here's the story

Given that I have 3 levels of firewalls on this network, not to mention I only run this PC as an administrator when installing and whatnot (a very good practice to get in to), I'm not too concerned.

Microsoft are under no obligation to write functions into thier OS that allow government agencies access to your computer. And as such, Considering that if it was ever proven it would kill the microsoft corporation overnight, I can't think of a single reason why they would do it.

If this were true, they would be getting all kinds of mad press just like Google had when there was talk about Google submitting search queries to the government a while back.

Did anyone check the date on that article? 4/9/1999. (Happens to be my birthday by the way). I think nearly 8 years later we can all rest easily tonight.

I'm not too worried considering there is nothing on my laptop that would be illegal or terrorist related anyways. Let em' have a look, perhaps they can get rid of some spy and ad-ware!

I found this info about martians coming to invade the earth. It's from a 1938 radio broadcast, but I think we should all start running for the hills anyway.

The crazy thing is how many people believed it was real. Didn't Orson Wells have to go on the next night and let everyone know it was just a story?

Correct - my Grandfather and I listened the following night when he aired that it was just a story; had millions across the country actually believing it originally.

Think something like that could happen again today or have we lost the innocence to believe such a thing?

Well, I don't think it would work today with an "alien" story, but it might work with some kind of story about war breakout or economy tragedy. However, the use of many media (Web, TV, Radio & Satallite) would prevent ppl from trusting from one source.

That's true Keith. It probably wouldn't take all that much to start a panic with some people. I get the feeling the same people that would want more than one source for the the news wouldn't be the ones who would panic though and that the people who would panic would happily do so if the one source they heard was believable enough.

If this were true, groups like the ACLU would be throwing a fit and suing everybody involved. A lot of people would run out and buy Macs within the week! And seeing that the article was written before 9/11, terrorism was not a top priority for the American government. I smell a lie.
