I took the easy way out about 9 years ago. My family has an account at myfamily.com and I have Family Tree Maker 2006. The program is very easy, even does online searches for likely ancestors for you, then easily imports the data. From there it's a click of a menu option to upload the tree to myfamily.com where anyone (that has a username & password to your particulary site) can view, edit, download, etc the tree. Myfamily.com also has a photo album, news, calendar, etc.

When we started the site was free, but alas nothing stays free. It's now $29.95 a year for 1 gb of space, which we have never filled even though we have over 800 pics. A few of my aunts and I take turns paying each year so I end up paying every fourth year. Not a bad deal for a no-worry, easy for everyone way to stay in touch with everyone spread across the globe and for everyone to contribute to the information in the family tree.

Keith,

I use Ancestry.com which I enjoy a great deal. Granted, I have never used anything else, so I have little to compare it to -- but I thought I would give you my opinion.

That said, it is also a service that happens to include access to the web-based tree building software -- but given that I needed both, it was a good solution for me. And recently they added the capability to export you entire tree to a particular format (the name escapes me right now) in case you need to walk away from the service.

Same difference - Ancestry.com owns myfamily.com & distributes Family Tree Maker . And it's a gedcom file that is extremely universal for other programs. I've been doing my geneology for going on 15 years & my hubby's for about 5 years (got tired of hearing he didn't know how he was related to people we ran into ). One of his distant cousins once emailed me a gedcom file and it was a snap to import it into my existing info - even merged duplicate individuals. Two of my favorite things about Family Tree Maker: 1) It has a relationship calculator - you can choose any two individuals and it will calculate the relationship. 2) Age calculator - you put in a date and the date of birth and it will tell you the exact age of the person at the time of an event.

I've been working on the family history for about 10 years. I started with Family Tree Maker and I'm still using it. Great program and IMO, the best out there.
