So, what are the qualifications / knowledge need for to be a web master?

To me,
1. Photoshop - or any other Raster graphics program
2. CorelDRAW! - or any other Vector graphics program
3. HTML / xHTML - should know the difference
4. CSS - don't need to be a GURU
5. Javascript - or any other client side scripting
6. PHP or JSP or ASP or ASP.NET
7. MySQL or MS SQL or any other RDBMS
8. Some SEO knowledge

Anything left for a novice web master?

What is your list?

Your have a long list! I know a little bit of PHP, ASP.NET and some JavaScript. that's all.For that you can see a L there, learning everyday with this community.

What is your list?

if you already know that you should probably look a bit into flash and animations and a bit into web servers. (example: apache).

also ... that's not exactly "novice" if you know it

Aside from those skills, I think you need to be patient and resourceful because this industry is new, you should be adept with the developments that can help you.

Yeap. I know flash too a little bit. Just modified templates. examples..

I know .htacess for redirection and other loading modules. httpd.conf for setting up multiple drupal sites with single code base. But i always affraid about apache as i am to CSS.

Very True. When i entered into web industry, i was utterly, financially failed in life. So at that time, i can't refuse any work that gave me bucks to make a live. Like hit and run guy, i learned everything listed above. I know, i am not expert in any of the above.

Now, i am some what settled in life (living in third world country.

).So i am learning to be patient and expertize some web technology. Thanks for your kind advice.

Such a list reads like web developer not webmaster.

Surely the distinction been that if you maintain a website your simply a developer. If you maintain a server holding (N) websites (that are not your sites) then your entering the correct realm or webmaster. (though sysadmin is the right term).

I do not wish to stand on toes and I know people will probably disagree but if gaining the title webmaster is this easy to gain for only been a developer then I'm a webgenius.

Which I know I am not.

You also need to be able to deal with clients, troubleshoot problems, recommend solutions, be able to write and communicate clearly, have a polite telephone manner, deal with web hosting issues.... the list is endless!
