You will have to do some research in your own province. There are more than a few Canadians lurking about (Adam, Chris, etc) that can offer better advice specific to Canadian law than I can. On the US side of the border it cost me $20 to register a sole proprietorship. Other types of businesses have different fees. Taxes will be different for you too, but I have to pay state and federal taxes on any income I make minus expenses. Since I work full-time, run my business part-time and donate a lot of my work I generally don't get taxed on my business income because it ends up being equal to my expenses.
Adam, Adam, where's Adam to answer this question better than I can????
