They don't stop support.
They have notified than OEM vendor would not be able to sell computers with an OEM version of WinXP.
But winXp will be supported for still a long time.

- 5 years Mainstream Support at the supported service pack level for Consumer/Hardware/Multimedia products and Microsoft Dynamics (formerly Microsoft Business Solutions) products
- 3 years of Mainstream Support for products that are annually released (e.g., Money, Encarta, Picture It!, and Streets & Trips

He, I switched from windows 98 just 8 month ago... And I miss linux a lot...
But no windows mobile 5 sync on linux, nor win98....
So don't worry, you'll still get your services packs and patche fixes.

Why is everyone so angry with Bill Gates? I just don't get it. If you could trade places with him wouldn't you? Ultimately what shapes future versions of Windows is shareholders, not Bill Gates. He's not even the CEO of the company any more. Besides that he gives enormous amounts of money to various charities and has even started his own. I would say that many rich people in this world do very little of the type of charitable work he does.

That could be why everyone's so angry with him...they can't trade places with him.
Personally, none of this comes as a major surprise or shock. One thing about Microsoft is that they do tend to upgrade or release new products at least every 3-4 years, and each time they release a new one, they phase out an old one.
The real problem would be if they didn't; where would future progress come from? (Yeah, I know, Open Source, blah blah blah...)

BTW, Republikin ... you can get off your "holier-than-thou" soapbox by editing my first post; FYI, I wasn't making any attempt to get around the swear filter -- I did that on purpose.

I know you did it on purpose and using a $ instead of an s in front of hit is not acceptable here.

Makes me laugh when people talk as though windows is the only option for an operating system.. Remember, You choose to use windows, Nobody is forcing you.

No, not being 'forced' but most of the software I use doesn't work on any other OS. As much as I despise MS and their nonsense.. Linux won't cut it and neither will a Mac-- which I wouldn't use if you GAVE me one anyway.

It's true that a lot of software that you use on windows wont run on Linux, But there are plenty of alternatives that do an equally good job on Linux that can replace Windows exclusive applications. And they tend to be free and open source.
If you use Office, Try Open Office. If you use photoshop, Try GIMP.
I think it has even got to the stage now where Linux will offer you a much wider variety of applications for each task, And 99% of the time you don't have to pay a penny. If anything it should be Linux users complaining that they would convert to windows, But windows just doesn't support the applications they need :P

Just a little interruption to this thread....
Flaming is not acceptable. The Mods do their job when it comes to the rules, and they do a good job. We do have a zero profanity rule, which means that you can't spell it like the l33t would, or any other way. Put the asterisks in and others will get that you used profanity.
So, if anyone wants to continue this thread, please do so. But do it by abiding by the rules.

Hmmm, I choose Windows just because the Mac OS is utter crap. Seriously, how do people use it? I just cannot mold it the way I like. With Windows I can. Linux? Don't get me started, I have to use it in Uni and I break it all the time, and my God is it slow. Same setup as the Windows machines, just five times as slow... and Open Office, nbot even close to the quality of Office.

On an equal machine there is no way Linux can be slower than windows. It runs fewer applications at start-up and the applications it does run generally use less resources than windows applications. It's the main reason it's used on most servers and the main reason people like NASA use Linux often as the OS on their space craft and probes.
What is it specifically about open office that make it of less quality than Microsoft office?
If you like being able to "mold" an OS to how you like it then Linux should be the OS you choose.

I only use Office (which I hate) at work where I"m forced to do so. I've been using OpenOffice since before it was even NAMED OpenOffice. As for Photoshop vs. GIMP - I don't think so. I work in the industry and PS is the industry standard. I can't send GIMP files to printers or other designers !

I believe there are ways of opening gimp files in PS.. But you could also run photoshop through wine, Or for that matter, Any windows applications.

If I remember correctly PS CS opens up just fine with wine however, last time I tried (about 6 months ago I think) CS2 wouldn't come up.
