Not really free, more like $512 (at a minimum). You must purchase a subscription to TechNet or MSDN in order to download their limited license software for evaluation purposes.

Other than that though, if you aren't normally an early adopter and don't like dealing with bugs and other nasties then I wouldn't purchase Vista for quite a while.

MSDN is fantastic as a subscription, but you need to understand what you're getting into ... and that it's not at all cheap. It's really IT shops that benefit most from having all the newest goodies to test with.

But, even as a fan ( more or less ) of Microsoft's, I wouldn't buy Vista. I'll get it when I buy a new computer that comes preloaded, which is a while off. It always takes them a while to work the kinks out, and it doesn't sound like they're finished.

My laptop came with Vista, it's pretty good except that my printer(s) didn't work

Apparently it has some driver issues with such things. Aside from that, my old programs/games ran fine. The only thing is that you need at least 512MB + RAM, I'd recommend 1GB. If you have less than a 1GB it might be a bit slow.

My advice would be to wait a while before moving to Vista. My fiance bought a new laptop a few weeks ago that had Vista pre-loaded on it. He really wanted to try Vista out, but he is now thinking about loading XP on it. It is quite a bit different from XP. He has a couple of games he wanted to play, and they wouldn't run with Vista. There are a few kinks that still need to be worked out too.

I also bought a laptop not very long ago that had Vista. It's new, it's different, but I won't say it's bad. However, I wouldn't suggest running out and buying it to change from whatever you have now.

In my opinion Vista should be free anyway, I don't see why we should pay for a pants operating system.

I got a P4 3GHz with 1.5GB ram, and **** thats slow.

Vista reminds me of running windows 95 on a 75MHz system... No, actually windows 95 was faster.

Your first mistake was buying a Pentium (please don't take this personally). I have an AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core at 2GHz per core with 2GB's of ram Vista Ultimate runs like a dream for me.

Ever since the P2 I have not been fond of Intel because their chips just seem slower.

Well, I had been using AMD since 1995 and they all see to burn out or slow down after 12 months. At least with this Intel one, its always been the same.
