Anyone here addicted to NightLine?

There was a segment today on the domains that were registered immediately after the VT shooting that seems like people just looking to profit off of the tragedy. I realize everyone needs to make money but it didn't even occur to me to run to GoDaddy and start scooping up domains.

Maybe that's why I'm poor and don't have domains on ebay with a half a million dollar asking price.

Did you think about registering domains after the news hit? I'd be worried about the hate mail and the bad karma.

I guess it depends what you intend to do with the domain. We could say that Nightline themselves, Or the news or the papers are taking advantage of a tragedy to make money.

I don't think there's anything wrong with snapping up the domain. It does exploit the situation a bit, but let's face it, somebody's going to eventually.

There was a story in the paper about scam sites offering video footage of the massacre for a fee. Now that is exploiting the tragedy. And of course, the video doesn't exist.

stox,

don't you think that news coverage is a little different from domain squatting? I do think that when the media goes on overkill with a news story they're moving away from providing up with information. Setting up a domain in anticipation of lawsuits and then auctioning it off is just blatant profiteering.

Tehfincheh,

I hadn't heard of that and I'm surprised that anyone would pay for it let alone fall for that scam. Nowadays everything is available on-line and with this incident I noticed that even the traditional media was going on-line to find news stories.

It's hardly domain squatting. I doubt any of the registered domains are going to get any type in traffic and we have no way of knowing what the intention of registering the domain was. This story sounds like mainstream news sensationalising something trivial again.

Not to misquote you Mr Thumb with the way I split your post, but the news coverage is not there because someone wants to provide coverage to keep the world alert of all the facts and issues. The media is there to make money, too. I would even say that some of the coverage of this whole very tragic incident is sheer profiteering.

My deepest condolensces to those families!
But for the news media to be trying to help and not profiteering, too? I saw some of the news channels that had 24 hour coverage of it for several days.

I think it's a shame that a large amount of people just seem to "feed" off the tragedies in this world, but I think that some of the media are the biggest "spoon makers" for this feeding.

Dave
