i have had one previous job, at that job the person who i worked for died so im really not sure what i could put in the references section of my CV.

Put in there "References available on request", just leave the whole references part out or get a reference from an old school teacher, police officer or someone else who you know who's opinion matters, putting that your last employer died (sorry to hear that btw) does sound like a lie, and it's a bit too much info for the CV imo...

Hi James

I would suggest you either seek your co-worker's assistance or you may seek for external parties' help, e.g. if your discipline is finance, you may ask your company's external auditor to verify your work experience and personality. Else, you may also want to get your supplier to help on this. Are my suggestions workable?

Follow DRP's advice. First, just putting "references available upon request" delays the conversation until a time when you've already impressed them some. Second, you'd be surprised that a lot of the time, they actually don't come up in a job search.

Also, follow everybody's advice about getting in touch with coworkers from the old position.

if you have any immediate boss like supervisor or manager who handles you and report with during your work, they are good references for your CV, or anyone who really knows and can prove your abilities...
