I've heard that about the free player, too, but I think they'd have a bit of trouble getting anyone to pay for the full version of that's the case. Besides, anyone in IT should be able to rebuild their machine from a software standpoint, if things went seriously haywire. Not that you really want to, but...
I can't think of any reason I need this, and I don't know much about the software ... but it's not true that all free bits have spyware hidden in them. I've written free software myself that doesn't.
