I was on another board and I entered a contest for a toon well I didn't win there were others that were much better than mine. a day later I get a PM saying that they liked the way mine looked and asked if i could do one for their t-shirt design, well i was surprised because I'm really not that great at toons but I think this guy thought he could get something cheap from me and I was'nt going to charge him alot so I got to work. he asked for a donkey with a bit of a smirk and he sent me an example that he liked. I made one of a donkey standing cross armmed and smiling with a big buck tooth smile and sent him a copy with a watermark of course to see if he liked the direction it was going. he wrote back explaining how much he liked the example he had sent earlier and wanted it to be like that so I agreed to try again. i made another with a 3/4 turn to the head and smirk this time just concentrating on the head because the body is a little easier once the face is done. again I sent him a copy with a watermark asking how he liked this rendition. again he pointed out his example and asked MAYBE YOU CAN TRACE THE EXAMPLE I SENT AND MAKE IT BIGGER. which we all know this is a huge NO NO!! I wrote him back explaining to him the copyright problems we as designers face and I would never steal another persons design like that.
needless to say he never wrote me back and now I'm thinking if he was willing to steal that he would be willing to steal mine so the qeustion remains will I get ripped off or not.
here are the images so if you see them on another board or a tshirt you can tell me. we have to watch out for each other because people like this have no problem with taking something that does not belong to them.

jeez what a brainiac lol. if he wanted that design so bad, why didn't he trace it himself. yeah i'll tell you if i see it around, but i doubt it...

Carl in the future always ask for money up front. Also you can deliver images with a watermark on them that makes them unusable until you get paid.

You might, or might not. Your friend Alex is proud to let us all know he has no morals. I had to give him some red reputation over that, and I don't like dinging people, but "I'll steal your work because I can" is an @$$hole move.

But it's also a lesson. The world is full of @$$holes.

I wouldn't try to get paid up front, because that might limit your business. But I would do a lot more to watermark your stuff, make it as unusable as you can until you get paid. And isn't this the reason they have NDAs?

I zapped the guy too. We've had to deal with low-lifes who steal designs over the years. If they had talent they wouldn't have to steal other peoples ideas. Forrest, where's that bottom dweller image... we need it.

You should consider putting a big fat © symbol in the middle of your designs. It won't stop everyone, although it will make it more difficult and raise the bar some. More to the point, if you ever have to go to court, you'll have a much easier point. You own the copyright by virtue of having created something, you don't have to actually register it, but if you mark it, no one can claim ignorance.

Carl, I forgot to pay you a compliment on your work earlier in the thread.

I can understand the trusting thing. I'm the same way. It was very hard for me to ask for a deposit the first time, but now I always do and won't start work without at least 25% (often more) upfront. I've found that people who are really interested in your work will have no problem with a deposit and those that balk probably were going to try to get out of the final bill anyway.

one thing I have learned is keep the PSD file because they are time stamped you have the proof that yours was made first. I guess my next job will be making an original watermark like forrest says it wont stop everybody but it will make me feel better anyway. and thanks vangogh.

Banning a user is a pretty big deal. It's one thing to flag a post as spam and for it to vanish, but it means the mods take this really seriously, to actually remove a user and potential ad clicker, just because it's the right thing to do.

This is a really good forum.

Nice designs btw, much better than what i can manage.

I noticed.. thats why its the only forum i really use daily... sad i know but u lot are really good, and i have found most people on here to be friendly and really helpful.

and i would still be making (more cringable) pages than i am now

and i definatly wouldnt know as much as i do now for xhtml, css and php. and im really greatsful

... my badly spelt and grammerd (deliberate mistake

) posts still remain...

If you know how to do computer graphic, people do too. In my opinion, The most important thing in designing is your idea. No matter what kind of watermark you use, there're dozen and dozen and dozen of people out there know how to remove it, or use your idea as a sample and manipulate another image.
Just ask for get paid up front and remember to keep the source file. You will be Ok.

*note: I bet I can remove those watermark you put on your images above within 10 mins.
