Hi friends,

I was just discussing something with a friend of mine, and we hit on teh point of money.

In his opinion, teh way to keep the family happy was money. like he was valueing money v v highly. In his opinion a father should work to earn the money for the fam, and because he needs 2 earn soo much money to keep his family happy it was excusable for him not to spend any time with his kids, or wife.

I disagreed on this point. I have always been brought up with the saying 'paisa haatoon ki dhool hai', (eng - money is teh dust of teh hands, i knwo doesnt soudn right its a saying in urdu basically meaning it aint important!) and i have up till now in every aspect of my life kept taht v much alive. I have never looked at money as anything important. And i have never seen my grandfather or father doing anything a ssuch. like they boith work/ed and i m really gratefull for teh father/daughter times ihad and teh granddaughter/grandfather times i had.

Like no matter what happened i would not even trade thsoe times in for any amount of money.

In my opinion just as long as u have enough to providse a roof and food twice. your cool.

So whats ur opinions?

I don't want to get too personal, and I don't know your friend or his family ... but I bet his kids and wife are more happy when they spend time with him than to have expensive gifts.

There's a Buddhist saying that trying to cure the lust for money by getting more money is like trying to put out a fire by pouring butter fat over it. I'm not saying this about your friend, just in general.

I spent today in the Cascade Mountains, hiking under a waterfall, and driving through heaven. I'm a lot happier than if, say, I got my hands on an iPhone, or a new laptop. Tomorrow I'm catching up with a friend I haven't seen in a few weeks, someone who always makes my day.

Some things I enjoy doing cost money - driving through the mountains burns gas - but at best it's more of a side effect. If I couldn't pay rent of put food on the table I'd feel very differently, but since I have an apartment I like and eat well, manage to feed my cat, the biggest things that determine my quality of life are how much time I spend with family and friends, and outdoors, either behind the camera or on bike, especially.

Unfortunately, without money in our society leads to death. Even the street people need money. However, if we were to live in a different society, let's say an isolated budhist with our own small patch of land. Then we could live quite happily without money or the need for such.

The importance of money is not the issue, it's the importance of the effect from using money that is.

I've heard many say "money is the root of all evil", however this is not what the original text says; it reads "the love of money is the root of all evil".

It's not really how much money someone has that's the problem, it's our attitude towards it. If making more and more money is the focus of our lives, we have lost our balance.

As in all things, common sense and moderation are the key to success.

In all honesty, I worry that with all kinds of money I would become a raving alcoholic and drug addict. So, for me, money would not be a nice thing to have.

Um. I am looking up other things or I would look it up, but what are "scruples"...

Not sure if I have them or not..o_o.

I have always been a fan of money, I have a little, I keep it in a jar on top of the refrigerator at home, I'd like to put more in that jar.

Money is important but not for happiness let alone eternal happiness.
You should be able to support your family, but you don't need to work to the extent that you never get to see or have fun/time with your family.

Spending time and having fun with your family is what it's important.

money makes the world go round. i dont believe in that statement. as long as ur together and happy. thats whats important.

That statement is true, what it means is the world in general and as a whole money is what effects the world the most, although there are some individuals who choose not to let it affect them like some people and to those people I have great respect for. However, it is easy to say that money is not important until a situation arrives (e.g. you when the lottery or you go bankrupt) and then for a lot of people it’s a different story.

I don't think what he said is very reasonable I love hanging out with my Father there isn't anything that could ever be better than hanging out with my Dad not even money
