It's a camera, it's a web browser, it's a email client, it's a universal remote control and it makes chai lattes. Have you seen what it COSTS? The 4 GB model is $500, and $600 for the 8 GB. Only service through AT&T, and the cheapest plan (US) is $60 a month. But the world peace function is a little buggy.
Apple plans to sell 10 million in the first year, but having one shows that you're an individual, one who thinks differently. It looks like a really nice phone or PDA, actually, but my gripe is how it's marketed. A proud new owner on the news said "When you wrestle with your phone every day, it's worth any price." How many of you wrestle with your phone? I have the free one that came with a year contract, and I don't even have to remember people's number anymore. It's got a camera, but no mp3 player, and I haven't tried the internet browser 'cause that costs extra. But it's really not hard to use.

I'm actually very disappointed that Apple decided to natzi'ize what stores could sell them (eg: Apple stores and AT&T direct stores.)
I am interested in one, but don't plan on buying one, but I know that the AT&T reseller store (that only resells AT&T) that I always go to, was upset that Apple wouldn't let them sell any, especially considering that these are the stores that make AT&T the most money.
I think it was a poor move by Apple. I didn't buy one, nor did I waste any time getting in line to buy one to put on Ebay.
Check out youtube for a few videos on this, but there was one lady who brought $16K with her to "buy out the store" of their iPhones. Ended up paying the first kid in line $800 for his spot too. Stupid lady. "I'm gonna buy them all and put them on ebay."
*shakes fist*
But it's pretty.. I just don't see it being functional (especially being a huge touch screen.) I still want my Blackjack.

I will never own a piece of apple anything (unless it's something old in which case it has tremendous eBay resale value).
One thing you have to remember is this is just a little computer and everything you want/need is a running process. This can get in the way of using the phone functionality. I have experienced this with other smart phones and let me tell you, a six second lag between the time you receive a call and the time the process actually knows you hit the answer button is enough to make some people just hang up.

Going to have to wait for the price to go down a bit, still a bit to much. Probably overrated just like the PS-3

I'd be interested, but I have no interested in being on AT&T so I guess I'll have to wait 5 years at least. The iPhone does look cool. When I first heard about it back in January I wasn't crazy about the way it looked though I've come to change my mind about that.
I would like to have one, but I would sooner wait for a generation or two before buying one. I'll happily let others work out the bugs in the product. I don't need to own something first. I'd rather own things that work well.
Also I seem to be doing fine at the moment with my Treo. The iPhone is certainly cool and I expect it to change a lot of things about future generations of phones. Assuming it stays ahead of the ones that come next there's a good possibility I'll own one at some point, but not in the near future.

My sister got one yesterday (she is definitely on the Mac ban wagon) and I played with it some today; it’s actually pretty sick, although the ring tones sucked really bad which kind of surprised me because Macs’ claim to fame is we are so trendy and hip to things like that. But I would really like one and it some one gave me one lets just say I wouldn’t say no.

I'm sure in time there will be better ringtones. Things like that are why I usually prefer to wait at least a few months before buying something brand new like the iPhone.

I'd like to have something kind of like it. If it took compactflash, and had more options for broadband, I'd be a lot more interested. I do like the idea of a small, pocket sized thing that you can access the net from ... if I could upload my best photos from the field to a server and not deal with a laptop on vacations, that would be great.
I probably won't have one any time soon, as I'm happy with the service I have now ... and my current phone doesn't bother me at all, no reason to replace it. But competition is a good thing; eventually I'll wind up breaking mine or wearing it out, and if Mac manages to raise the bar, that's a good thing.
If I ever wind up paying for a fancy PDA phone, it'll probably run Windows CE. I'm not in love with Microsoft, but I've worked with the .net compact framework before, and I'm slowly but surely working on a CMS ... it might wind up being nice to be able to change things about my site from the road easily.

Nope.. I like my 6700. I've never liked Apple and have no plans to buy any Apple products. Hopefully the iPhone will drive other manufactures to build better phones.

I love Apple stuff, but I think the iPhone is a waste of money at this point. I think it's really awesome with the touch screen and all the cool features, but it's also got some gaping issues that send me running. No third party apps (the RIA they showed off at WWDC is just an excuse for third party apps)? Only AT&T? Those two alone are huge mistakes IMO.
Let the price come down a bit, fix some of the biggest issues, and let me choose a different carrier. Only then will I even consider purchasing one.

Chris I knew you'd show up in this thread before too long. I agree there are some holes in the iPhone. I'm sure some of those holes will be closed in future generations. Even more though I think the iPhone will change how companies and us see phones. I expect to see a lot more phones with the touch screen in the coming months.

Unlike other brats my age, I just use my phone for texting and calling. The iPhone looks and works well, but it would be wasted on me. I bought a contract phone with free Sony Ericsson W810i last october and I still don't use the Walkman or camera, basically because their naff and I have better digital equipment.
My next phone will be something simple.

The battery is part of the phone. As in you can't take it out and put a fresh one in. What were they thinking! I know I'm not the only person in the world who has to travel for work every now and then.

I forgot about that one.
I'm guessing the thought process was something along the line of once the battery needs to be replaced and you realize how much it will cost to have Apple replace it you'll start comparing that cost to the price of a brand new next generation iPhone and decide the new phone is the better value.
