Last night while my wife and I were at the airport picking up friends, thieves broke down the door to our house and stole both our laptops...

The house is alarmed so 20 seconds after they entered the house it started blaring, otherwise they would have made off with a lot more...

We have some backups but we have lost at least a months' time in recovering the latest stuff we were working on...I am ready to open a serious can of whoop*** on some low life thieves...

OK I've dumped on everyone... I feel a little better.

I can't imagine how invaded and pissed you must feel. I lost my ipod and couldn't sleep but the first thing I thought was, "at least I didn't lose my laptop" and I laughed as if I felt that were impossible. All my place has in front of it is a sign for an alarm company. Most people don't insure laptops and even if you did how can you get back all the files you lost/settings/bookmarks/file organization etc. **** its times like these that people start looking for security cameras and mob connections. What kind of laptops were they? If you say Toshiba, I'm gonna open a can of whoop *** on anyone I see with a Toshiba.

That sucks, Dave. Did you at least have the anti-theft mechanism activated that some laptops have?

I know how you feel dude. I too was a victim of laptop theft twice. The first time I was at school and I had just stayed up all night finishing a term paper that was 30% of my final grade and when I got back from lunch before I even printed out my work it was stolen. The second time was like a month ago, I was checking out of a hotel, my car was parked right in front of the main door in daylight, I went in to sign for my room came back out and some took my laptop right out of my front seat. I am still recovering from that one of over due work.

Make sure to keep an eye on eBay or anything similar there might be in your country.

That is good that you have an alarm system. Who was the provider? I am a Brink's dealer so if you need an upgrade let me know. I also have contacts for any type of camera system that you could want.

It may have been in poor taste but lets give him the benefit of a doubt and assume he genuinely just wanted to help.

I don't know if it would help to hear about the data I've lost when laptops have died, or when car thieves stole my book of CDs with my photos burned onto them ... back in the days of 20 GB drives when those discs had my only copies. I still want to find the guy who did that, and know he threw them out when he found out they weren't worth anything to him. I had family pics, places I haven't been to in years, nudes of the girl I was dating at the time ... and the guy stole an autographed copy of Galen Rowell's book, who was in a Cessna that crashed into the desert in Bishop, and isn't signing anymore anything.

Misery loves company, right?

Do you have insurance to cover the hardware, at least?

How much space does your web host give you? How fast can you upload data? Not the best route, but not a horrible way to backup important files off site.

Have you made any online enemies? You may want to consider them to be the criminals.

Anyway, sorry to hear such unfortunate news.

Hope you find the crooks and press the maximum charges you can on them! I hate people like that!

I've actually heard the opposite. Laptops are easy to grab and easy to sell, especially on college campuses. You can e-bay them or break them into parts.
