Can someone please explain the difference between "Web Site" and "Website"?? I've always been a little confused as to which term to use...

The only difference is an arbitrary space. Some people use two words and some people use one. I used to use web site, but over time I switched to website.

It's really just a preference and an attempt to capture search traffic from both words instead of the one.

They're just the same for me... the only difference is the space.

Web site is interchangeable with a Place on the web. Which can be a chat room, conversation window or other web utility that possesses electronic space on the internet.

Whereas Website is a noun to itself meaning a page, typically viewed in a browser.

That's the denotation.

I think it honestly means the same thing and people are lazy

(That information is a summary from a German Dictionary. If you disagree, bite me!)

I think it really developed because people didn't know where it was one word or two. Some people decided to use two words and others decided to use one word.

I'd say a website (web site) is something I'm viewing in a browser. If I'm on instant messenger I'm not not viewing a website (web site). I might be using the functionality that a site is providing, but I'm not currently on the site itself. I don't see where one spelling means one thing and the other spelling means something different. It's more a case of there being two acceptable ways to spell it.

I love philosophical discussions. According to the vortex of knowledge, Wikipeida, "web site" and "website" are interchangeable. They do give slightly different results in google, though.

Web site derives from the Latin phrase weba situlia meaning “A site of many webs.” It was coined by the late Sr. Tomas Galahad in 1502, were he was recording the different sites of webs. Website, means a site belonging to a web, and was first used by the late Al Gore, after inventing the internet.
