I am listening to some music from the Pirates of the Caribbean and it got me thinking. Why is it that even when there are no words, music can make you feel scared? It (classical type music) also can make you feel happy, strong, sad....well, it can make you feel all kinds of emotions. Why is that?

I'm trying to learn the same thing about photography.

Some of it is how we're brought up; a lot of particular classical music has been used so often, say in Loony Tunes, that we just have that association. But it's something like body language ... the people who wrote certain bits of classical music were social geniuses who knew how to communicate a very particular mood without words.

I think it really depends on the person and how they interpret the music. Also how emotional the person is and how much they appreciate what their listening to. I like taking a minute and really listen to the music you can sometimes fine it smoothing.

I think some of it is the associations you have with the music. If you were scared by a spider as a toddler while a piece of music was playing in the background it might always scare you later in life.

Mostly though there's a direct connection between sound and feeling. Certain sounds and rhythms and tempos make us feel a certain way. It's like asking why you feel pain if you hold your hand over a flame. I think it's just the way we're wired.

It makes you feel because you are crazy. You probably also felt sorry for the lamp. (Oh god I hope that reference isn't lost)

That is really crazy I was listening to music from Pirates of the Caribbean yesterday! It did not make me feel scared, it did however make me want to sell everything I had buy a ship and spend the rest of my days “pulling anchor and setting sail”.

I really enjoy listing to just music sometimes, one of my favorite bands is Phish (or was seeing how their not a band anymore) but a lot of times they would play just music. I really think that is a lost art.

Speaking of good soundtracks that spring emotion, has anyone ever listened to the “Requiem for a Dream soundtrack”? You need to watch the movie first which I have to say is very intense (and that might be an under statement), but after seeing the movie, I get a very eerie feeling when I listen to the music.
