Hey,

I have a client who saw a website he wanted me to copy. I copied the site for him but I did not steal anything such as graphics or content from the site he wanted copied. I simply copied the layout. Would this be considered copy right infringement

Could somone send me to a good site that has Internet copy right laws?

Thanks,
Murphy

Many websites have the same layout, but different in content and graphics wise. As long as your haven't copied content, graphics etc then I think you should be alright.

But I'm no expert.

Do you know where I can find information on internet copy rights. I'm pretty sure your correct on the subject, but I do want to be sure and I don't like lawsuits.

Agree with post above. It is quite difficult to find new layout. I think that soon his layout will look different.

Yeah, essentially there's one set of laws you and I have to obey, and a different set for multi-national corporations.

Hmm... if we made WMT a multi-national corporation by donations, we could torrent everything.

It looks like once someone complains you need to take the content down...? Is that right? I know the law generally says it's up to the rights-holder to enforce their rights, but if you produce digital content, do you really need to know about every site on the world where it could potentially be downloaded?

If I were better at image recognition, enough to write some really efficient code, I'd make a killing with a spider hunting down copies of digital files ... a lot like Copyscape, except that it's very easy to make a visually or auditorally insignificant change to a file that changes all of the bytes.

Copy to bitmap and add a black square on the lower left corner... works every time.

Yeah ... there's a technique of adding a faint noise-like pattern that mathematically survives all kind of edits. It's too early in the morning to remember the name ... lithography? I'm not really convinced, though.

And like you said, change a corner pixel to all black and it'll give a different signature but people won't notice one pixel at the edge. That's what makes it so hard to write up an algorithm to deal with this. That, and the huge scale of the net.

Gail,

Asking general advice in the other thread is one thing, but you should NOT be airing the particulars of a legal issue on a forum. This is NOT the place.

EDIT: I reported the post. Hopefully a moderator will delete it.
