"More words." It's that simple.

You don't actually have to put them on your home page as such either. You can use meta descriptions for this as well (big G does use them).

<meta name="keywords" content="your, keywords, like, this" />
<meta name="description" content="description of the page this code is on" />

Those are the 2 most common ones, put them between the <head> </head> tags in your .html document.

You can also use alt tags on your images to get better ads. <img src="image.png" alt="cool screan shot!" />

Google needs more content to judge your website. Write more and use more different words.

First of all, it's an alt attribute, not a tag. Second...just stuffing keywords into them won't help that much. They're meant to describe pictures to the visually disabled. It's just that a bunch of dirtbags came up with "SEO reasons" to use them.

You may use section targeting that can guide Google Adsense bot to crawl the right section of content, and hence get a more relevant ads.

You should try creating more targeted content. Example, websites about speakers usually attracts speakers ads.

You seemed to instantly assume the worse on this one. You can use alt attributes for both purposes simultaniously. ie...
If I have a car website with a picture of a blue '67 mustang, I could put a few different things in the alt section. ie..
"car"
"mustang"
"blue 67 mustang"

The "blue 67 mustang" is probably going to be best from both an SEO and a "help the blind people and people with lynx" perspective. It might also get you some good clicks from google image search!

Just to add (because he doesn't know what meta tags are) you may need to know where to add them. Put them inbetween your HEAD tags.
<head>
<meta name="keywords" content="your, keywords, like, this" />
<meta name="description" content="description of the page this code is on" />
</head>
