All feedback appreciated on this
I have been considering adsence optimisation and the effects of smartpricing, previously I have thought that the more ads you can place on a page (without distracting from the content) the more chance you have of an ad being shown that appeals to the visitor and hence getting a click. But other factors are the cost per click, obviously its better to have 5 clicks at 20 cents per click than 10 clicks at 5 cents per click. Factor in the placement of your ads (not considering colours at this point) there are obviously good and bad places to postion your ads. For example on my site I have a wide leaderboard style ad in the header, but the google hot spots map suggest a smaller ad within the main content body would get more attention, the disdvantage is I would have to use a 1/2 leaderboard, and display 2 ads not 4. But if those 2 ads attract a higher cost per click, and I get more clicks throughs due to placement, maybe less ads on the page would make more revenue. Taking this one stage further, if I have 3 ad units and one link unit per page (the max allowed) I have up to 16 clickable links per page that generate revenue, but if I reduced to number to say 10 links per page (3 smaller ad units with 2 links each) and one 4 link link unit - I may find the ads that do appear are 1 - more relevent and 2 are higher payers then the click through rate would remain the same or increase - due to better placement and more relevance and earnings would increase because the higher paying ads would only show because of googles bidding system.
Any thoughts anyone? - before I try
