On the google keywords tool - what is the difference between "exact" and "broad"?

"exact" means exactly what it says, it will match only the exct word/phrase used in the campaign.

"broad" on the other hand means the exact opposite. The ad will be shown for synonyms, plurals, the phrase words in different order, partial matches for the phrase etc.

Or of course you could simply ask Google themselves.

exact means ....someone get result car deals on searching car deals on google Broad means he will get results on lots of things related to car and deals broadly...let me know if this is not clear to you....

Here is a quick explanation of all the keyword options from Google Adwords:

1. Broad match: keyword
   Allows your ad to show on similar phrases and relevant variations
2. Phrase match: "keyword"
   Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase
3. Exact match: [keyword]
   Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase exclusively
4. Negative match: -keyword
   Ensures your ad doesn't show for any search that includes that term

Exact Match -Only if the Keyword you're Targeting occurs in the Search Box,the ads gets displayed..

Broad Match - The Ads gets displayed even a related Term/Synonym for your keyword is occuring in the Search Box.

For Ex: If you're Targeting for [dog training],then the ad will appear only if 'dog training' is occuring in the search box..

if you're targeting for Broad Match,your ad will get triggered even if the search term is "how to potty train my dog"..

[womens clothes] will only show when someone searches for EXACT term: "womens clothes". Exact terms are very useful in narrowing down ctr.
