I wanted to start a thread for the average joe adwords marketer that is throwing money out the window on expensive google keywords and giving up before they make any money.

First off, you need to make your headline so irresistible that a person must click on it. You need to build curiosity in 10 seconds, or they look at someone else's ad.

You need to relate your headline to a problem that someone has.
"Making Money" is always a good one, but you need to solve a problem with in the headline.

Like "Earn $3000 in 2 Hours After You Read This Free Report" or

Discover the Secrets to Lovemaking That Will Have Her Begging For More"
I know not a money making one, but you get the idea.

How To.....

is always a good beginning too.

Please share your good headlines that have yielded results so the others can benefit.

Thanks

What ever product or service you promote should be the headline. If people are searching on Google or Yahoo, etc... for your valuable service or info. then that should be your most important keyword which will be bold in your headline and stand out.

if you want a good CTR, you should be using the keyword you are bidding on in the headline of the ad.

Exactly...Google even tells you this in their tuts and tips and help files. It can be a challenge -- you don't get a very long headline, so it's awfully important to make it count as much as possible! Takes some trial and error, but keep trying different approaches.

Get creative and don't be afraid to be different. Putting your keywords in the ad itself will bold those words, but if your keyword is "fluffy dog widgets" and everyone is using that as their headline you should use something else and then YOU will stand out. You can put fluffy dog widgets in the body. Just because Google says it is a good idea doesnot mean it is a hard and fast rule. It may actually hinder your chances of getting visitors.

Also, you can play with what is known as white space to get clicks too. Just be different and innovative when you have to and copy the best when you don't have to. I pay attention to what everyone else is doing and take examples from the best ads out there already on the keywords I am targeting. I simply make it better. I only have to beat the people on the same page as me, not be the greatest copywriter in the world. Don't forget that.

Also for some reason, no matter what the headline is if I put a question mark at the end, or even a colon or semi-colon I seem to get a better CTR everytime! Go figure.

Totally awful, I agree. The thing is I do not expect anyone to actually give some of their best headlines. Really, unless you need to go off the wall to differentiate from your competition, the best headlines are the onmes that state what you have...plain and simple.

Tricky headlines can bring a lot of clicks but you are sometimes creating less targeted visitors for yourself by doing that.
