HAHA. Real education? Any acquired knowledge is real education. Who in the world told you that learning true graphic arts means going to school or taking classes? Practice is really all it takes to learn anything, whether you pay some professor/school to teach you or learn it on your own. Practicing it is the only way to actually learn it and improve your skill. Again you can waste your money paying someone to teach you but it's not necessary to learn "TRUE" graphic arts. After all the schools aren't teaching you anything you can't learn from a book at your local library.

If you learn the basics at minimum you can play around (experiment) with the tools of whichever software you use and come up with really nice graphics. The more graphics you come up with the better you get (similar to what vangogh and albert_chu said). However far your creativity takes you just flow with it.
