Marf, you can use images from a game in a banner, everyone knows it`s from a game, everyone does it. But in a logo/identity you can`t use other logo : e.g. Quake logo :P

Actually in my first logo, i used the E from internet explorer LOL- Sshhhhhh
Of course, it was never used

My entries (I'm not really that good at headers. Too much space to fill in -- lol.) You could enlarge the logo instead to fit the full width of the header and it would look neat or enlarge but center it (just ideas)::





But giving the header a shot - here's my crazy idea of a header (told you I'm not good at headers):

what gradient? oh im done doing revisions, busy trying to fill up my portfolio work for college.
