Hi,

I am a total newbie when it comes to Photoshop so please bear with me.

I have a button on one of my websites that I need to change the text on it but when I open it in PS 8 it appears multi-layered or locked? There seems to
be a pink background to it of some kind.

It is a gif file. Any help would be appreciated. I am so new to this so be gentle.

You want to go into Photoshop, and depending on how the document is set up, just remove the text all together. That will let you re-use the same one button for all of them, by using html to display the text in front of it. That will also help the search engines get a better idea of how your site is divided up, and what it's about, which means sending you better traffic.

If you're opening the GIF file in Photoshop, you cannot edit it and it WILL be 'locked. You have to first change the mode from INDEXED to RGB -- go to Image, Mode - then choose RGB, that should 'unlock' the 1 layer.

The next thing you should do DUPLICATE that layer so that you don't work on or destroy the original. Make your modifications to the COPY, then save the file as a PSD file. From there you can use Save for WEB to save BACK to a GIF, and remember to define a MATTE COLOR that is the same color as the background the button will sit on.
